WWE News: Goldberg retires after Raw goes off the air?

What’s next for Goldberg?

What’s the story?

After Raw went off the air, Goldberg spoke to the WWE Universe and gave an emotional and heartfelt farewell speech.

The Background

Goldberg returned to WWE after a 12-year hiatus from the company in October of 2016 and wasted no time in reigniting his feud with Brock Lesnar. The six months that followed saw Goldberg embarrass ‘The Beast’ on multiple occasions, most notably at Survivor Series when he defeated him in just 1 minute and 26 seconds.

Their feud culminated this past Sunday at WrestleMania 33 where Goldberg defended his WWE Universal Championship, which he captured from Kevin Owens at Fastlane, against Lesnar in a hard-hitting match. Goldberg’s loss at Mania seems to have not only ended his rivalry with Brock but possibly his in-ring career as a whole.

The heart of the matter

During his speech, Goldberg made it clear that he wasn’t reading from a script and that he was speaking from the heart. He directed the majority of his address to his family, who were sitting at ringside, and was grateful for the opportunity to perform in front of his son.

“You guys gave me the opportunity after 13 years to share a part of my life that you never saw. The past number of months have been an unbelievable ride. I'm the luckiest guy in the world to be given an opportunity to come back and to show you a little piece of what I used to do. You can boo me, or you can cheer me, but the fact is that little boy right there is the reason why my heart still beats, is the reason why I wake up every damn morning and go to the weight room and drive my ass into the ground to try to become something that he can be proud of.”

Goldberg was clearly proud of what he accomplished during his latest run in WWE and feels he has gone some way in making up for the way he left previously in 2004.

"Thirteen years removed from the debacle of WrestleMania 20, I think we did pretty damn good last night, Brock and I.”

Although this was certainly a farewell from Goldberg, at least for now, he has left the door open for a potential return in the future, as you can see in the video below.

Author’s Take

I think it’s fair to say that Goldberg has exceeded expectations over the last six months. Personally, I wasn’t that excited to see him come back, but he has been fun to watch and has cut some intriguing and captivating promos.

He has been able to accomplish what he set out to do by performing in front of his family. He has also given the WWE several memorable moments that will be replayed for years to come.

With that being said, I would be perfectly happy if this was the last we see of Goldberg as I don’t think there is anything else left for him to accomplish as an in-ring performer.

But we must give credit where it is due, he has entertained the fans since his return, and I believe he is held in a higher regard by a large number of fans than he was prior to this latest run.
