WWE News: Jim Ross on Jinder Mahal getting a push by the WWE

Jinder Mahal took away Randy Orton’s title belt on this week’s SmackDown Live

What’s the story?

In his most recent blog on Jrsbarbq.com, iconic WWE commentator Jim Ross discussed the push of SmackDown LIVE Superstar Jinder Mahal and explained why it might not be a bad thing.

In case you didn’t know…

Jinder Mahal became the #1 contender for the WWE Championship by winning a six-pack challenge match on the 18 April episode of SmackDown LIVE. On this week’s show, Mahal confronted WWE Champion Randy Orton after the latter’s match against Eric Rowan.

Orton attempted to deliver a DDT from the second rope on Jinder, but The Bollywood Boyz rushed in to make the save. The three of them then assaulted ‘The Viper’ and took away his title belt. Later in the show, they were seen escaping from the arena in a limousine with Mahal still in possession of the belt.

The heart of the matter

Jim Ross opined that although many people are concerned with Jinder Mahal’s quick rise to the top bracket, he thinks that it is a calculated risk taken by the WWE and is worth the chance. Here’s what the WWE Hall of Famer said:

“The rapid advancement up the card of Jinder has some concerned, and I get that point, but I see it as worth the chance and, fast track or not, Mahal is somewhat of a calculated risk.”

According to ‘Good Ol’ JR, it may not be a bad idea to make put the WWE Championship around the waist of ‘The Maharajah’. He feels that it is a shocker which can be considered by the WWE. Ross wrote:

“Question...what if Jinder Mahal becomes the next, WWE Champion? Stranger things have happened and it's not the worse idea that I've heard lately. This shocker might be worth a bit of consideration.”

However, the legendary commentator suggested that there is no need for Jinder Mahal to yell in his promos as people generally tend not to pay attention to antagonists who scream at them. He added:

“I would merely suggest that Jinder doesn't have to yell wall to wall on his promos to make his points because most of us organically/automatically tune people out who scream at us especially if they are an antagonist.”

What next?

The ‘House of Horrors’ match between Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt for the WWE Championship at the Payback pay-per-view will determine whether or not Jinder Mahal will be facing Orton for the title at Backlash.

Author’s take

It looks pretty obvious that ‘The Apex Predator’ will successfully defend his title against Wyatt at Payback. The reason for this is that the WWE cannot afford to have both their major championships, the WWE title and the WWE Universal Championship, on the same show.

This means that Jinder Mahal will be getting an opportunity to become only the second Indian-origin champion in the WWE after The Great Khali.
