What’s the story?

WWE's legendary commentator, Jim Ross has confirmed that he will be leaving the company at the end of this month. He announced on his podcast, The Jim Ross Report, that his contract expires on March 29th and he will not be renewing it.

In case you didn’t know…

Jim Ross has been with the WWE since 1993, baring a couple of years. He joined as a wrestler first at WrestleMania IX and then became a commentator just to fill in for Vince McMahon.

He was let go early in 1994 for leaking inside info to journalists but was rehired in December, the same year. Ross left the company and moved to New Japan Pro Wrestling in 2015 but returned for Wrestlemania 33 in 2017 to call the match between The Undertaker and Roman Reigns. He had signed a 2-year deal and that is set to expire this month.

The heart of the matter

Jim Ross has been heavily linked with the newly formed, All Elite Wrestling and it looks like that move is on. The legendary commentator announced on his show, which coincidentally featured AEW's Chief Branding Officer, Brandi Rhodes.

JR confirmed that he spoke to Vince McMahon a couple of weeks ago, and they mutually agreed that it was best to part ways.

“I still want to play the game, I still want to stay busy. I will not be returning to WWE after the 29th of March. I’m 67, I still feel I can get the job done doing wrestling play-by-play and I want to explore that opportunity and that possibility. So, I’ll be moving on in a positive way, nothing but good things to say about everyone involved,” he said on the podcast.

What’s next?

JR has made it clear that he wants to be more involved in play-by-play commentary and that is something WWE are not willing to offer him. AEW on the other hand, need a voice for their promotion and who better than the one who made millions of pro-wrestling fans fall in love with it.
