WWE News: Johnny Mundo explains how he and Rey Mysterio started a riot at Lucha Underground

Mundo and Mysterio started a riot

What’s the story?

Johnny Mundo who was recently on X-Pac’s podcast this week explained how he started a riot in a Lucha Underground match against Rey Mysterio.

In case you didn’t know...

Johnny Mundo’s character gimmick in the WWE, John Morrison was based on the character of the famous singer, songwriter and poet Jim Morrison, the former lead singer of the Doors.

The heart of the matter

In a recent interview on X-Pac’s podcast, Johnny Mundo spoke about one of the most memorable matches he had with Rey Mysterio. The interview made note of the difference in the environments between smaller promotions like the AAA and the WWE.

Mundo said that he was in a match with Rey Mysterio when a member of the crowd threw a beer can at him. He stated that normally in the WWE, the man would have been thrown out, but that was not the case in the AAA.

Mundo proceeded to pick up the can and threw it back at the man. At this point, the man was angered and jumped the guardrail. There was hardly any security, so he ran as the security guard and Rey Mysterio tried to stop them.

He went on to say how that had instigated a riot of sorts, with beers, coins, water bottles and cups flying everywhere. The match was called off and Mundo was told to get out of there.

What’s next?

Luckily for Mundo, he escaped the ring without any injuries. Hopefully, the AAA will decide to beef up security and prevent incidents such as this from occurring once more. There have been reports that the security at the venue has improved since the whole fiasco.

Author’s take

This incident proves how different the environments at smaller promotions such as the AAA and bigger ones like the WWE. In the WWE, if a member of the crowd had done something like that, he would have been thrown out, but at Lucha Underground, a crowd member is allowed to jump the guardrail and attack a wrestler.

This calls for higher awareness with respect to funding and security at these smaller promotions. Mundo’s story was still an ‘insane’ one though.
