What's the story?

Not long ago, Kofi Kingston was informed by Vince McMahon that he cannot compete against Daniel Bryan at WWE Fastlane next month. Kevin Owens would return to take his place in the match.

Owens and Kingston would team up later during the night to take on Daniel Bryan and Erick Rowan in a tag team main event. During the course of the match, Kevin Owens unleashed his new finisher to pin the current WWE Champion.

In case you didn't know...

Kevin Owens was a RAW superstar before this, so it's odd that he's on SmackDown Live right now. I've attempted to answer why in this other piece I wrote up.

It was odder still to see Kevin Owens team up with Kofi Kingston for the main event match. This is because Owens took Kingston's rightful place in the contest. It makes absolutely no sense from a kayfabe perspective.

The heart of the matter

Kevin Owens seems to have lost a fair bit of weight and so he displayed a very different array of moves during the course of the match as he took Daniel Bryan and Erick Rowan to the limit. He even did a move over the top rope that someone from 205 Live would be proud of.

But the move that actually made headlines is the Stone Cold Stunner that Kevin Owens delivered to pick up the big win. The announcers made mention of the fact that Stone Cold Steve Austin is a personal hero of the Canadian superstar. One wonders if Austin has given his blessings to Owens, to carry his legacy forward.

What's next?

Kevin Owens will take on Daniel Bryan at WWE Fastlane. Will he continue using the Stone Cold Stunner too? Only time will tell for sure.
