What's the story?

During a recent edition of Edge and Christian's podcast, Pod of Awesomeness, SmackDown Live Superstar Kevin Owens said that he didn't feel like 'the top' guy in the WWE after winning the WWE Universal Championship.

In case you didn't know...

Kevin Owens won a fatal four-way match against Seth Rollins, Big Cass and Roman Reigns to win the vacant WWE Universal Championship after Finn Balor was forced to vacate it due to injury. Owens then held the title for 188 days, losing the title to a returning Goldberg at Fastlane 2017.

The heart of the matter

Speaking to Edge and Christian, Owens talked about how he hoped he would feel after winning the main title in the WWE,

"To me, I thought that was it. I'm like, 'alright, I'm the Universal Champion, so, clearly, this was going to, like, solidify me as the top guy that I've always wanted to be.'

However, Owens revealed that he didn't feel how he wanted to feel once he claimed the vacant championship and was, in actual fact, quite underwhelmed by the whole thing,

"But I don't think it really did. It didn't turn out to be what I was hoping. Like, it didn't turn out to be this thing that would make me a top guy, the way like I felt that it would."

What's next?

Kevin Owens is coming fresh out of a stunning Hell in a Cell match against Shame McMahon, reuniting with his new 'best friend' (sorry Jericho) Sami Zayn. It's unclear what's next for Owens and Zayn but it sure looks like they're having fun out there.

Author's take

It looks like Kevin Owens is his own biggest critic, but I honestly feel he's being a bit hard on himself here. I thoroughly enjoyed Kevin Owens' championship run and was incredibly annoyed when they decided to have him lose the title to Goldberg.
