WWE News: Kevin Sullivan says that he created Goldberg

Former WCW booker Kevin Sullivan says that he was the mastermind behind the Goldberg character.

What’s the story?

Ahead of WrestleMania 33 this past weekend, former WCW booker Kevin Sullivan was interviewed by Hannibal TV at Wrestlecon to discuss his time with the company before their ultimate demise. Sullivan touched on Goldberg, who had a WWE Universal Title match against Brock Lesnar at the Show of Shows, and revealed that he was, in fact, the mastermind behind the former NFL player’s pro wrestling gimmick.

In case you didn’t know...

Goldberg was a monstrous presence during the Attitude Era when he stepped onto the scene in WCW and amassed an enormous undefeated streak. The former Atlanta Falcon suffered his first loss to Kevin Nash after Scott Hall interfered in the match and shocked Goldberg with a taser.

The heart of the matter

Here’s what Sullivan had to say to Hannibal TV about seeing Goldberg headline WrestleMania after their time together in WCW (quotes via Wrestling Inc.):

"I was the one that started Bill Goldberg, I saw the streak, I changed him into Mike Tyson with the short boots with the tights. Before that he was just an Atlanta Falcon. I am very proud of Bill and God bless him, I hope he wrestles another 12 years."

Author’s take

Goldberg’s initial run in the professional wrestling business with WCW was unprecedented and will likely never be repeated again. He was a real turning point in the midst of the Monday Night Wars, and his recent run with the WWE solidified himself as one of the greatest to ever lace up a pair of boots. The door remains open for Goldberg to make any more future appearances if he wants to down the road, so perhaps this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him inside the WWE ring.
