What's the story?

Nikki Bella and her sister Brie made it down to the final three in The Royal Rumble match last night, but after Asuka managed to send Brie over the top rope, it was her sister Nikki that eliminated her and cost her the chance to fight for the Women's Championship at WrestleMania, but it seems that there is a reason behind Nikki's actions.

In case you didn't know...

Nikki and her sister Brie have had a long rivalry in WWE over the past few years, so much so that it was voted the Worst Feud of the Year back in 2014. The two sisters have been off screen over the past few months as they dealt with changes in their personal life which include Brie giving birth to her first child and Nikki arranging her marriage.

Brie was last seen at WrestleMania 32 when she forced Naomi to tap in the 10-Diva Tag Team Match that was part of the kickoff show before she announced that she was retiring from WWE and hoping to start a family with her husband Daniel Bryan.

Nikki was last seen at WrestleMania 33 where she teamed with John Cena and the couple defeated The Miz and Maryse before Cena proposed to his girlfriend of five years. Nikki has since been part of Dancing With The Stars and been on the sidelines rehabbing her neck injury and being the main part of Total Divas.

The heart of the matter

WWE is fully aware that Nikki and Brie Bella play huge roles in the success of Total Divas, which is why Brie's elimination is in order to set up a storyline for Total Divas in the new season.

Dave Meltzer discussed this in a recent episode of The Wrestling Observer Radio and Bryan Alvarez even joked that they could get a good few episodes out of the betrayal. Total Divas has documented the climb throughout the Women's Evolution, so it's only fair that the latest moment in their history is documented as well.

What's next?

Nikki came down to the final two in the first ever Women's Royal Rumble match so it's likely that she will now stick around and play a part in storylines heading into WrestleMania, it is unknown what the plan is for Brie Bella.

Author's take

Brie is always the sister who is eliminated or defeated by Nikki so it wasn't that much of a shock that her sister showed her true colors once again. It was thought that it would have led to something between the two former Champions at WrestleMania but after how their last feud went down, WWE hopefully doesn't have that in any future plans. It'll be interesting to see what the Bella's are part of moving forward since both women haven't wrestled properly for a while.
