What fantasy matches could Rey Mysterio have in WWE?
What fantasy matches could Mysterio have in WWE?

What's the story?

WWE has been teasing a fantasy match between Rey Mysterio and AJ Styles recently. Mysterio was interviewed by 'Inside the Ropes' and asked about the superstars he'd want to face in modern-day WWE.

The two superstars he mentioned were AJ Styles and Finn Balor. Mysterio also addressed if he'd join 205 Live, if he made a comeback.

In case you didn't know...

Rey Mysterio came out at the Number 27 spot in the Royal Rumble this year, to a really thunderous ovation. Reports emerged that his appearance was just a one-off affair and that he would not be staying back for the long haul.

We learned not long after that he would be part of NJPW's 'Strong Style Evolved' show at Long Beach, taking on Jushin Thunder Liger in a highly anticipated match.

There has also been a lot of talk about Mysterio possibly signing with Impact Wrestling, though nothing concrete has emerged in that regard.

The heart of the matter

When asked which modern day-superstars Mysterio would like to mix it up with, he had this to say:

Man, there are so many strong names that have been around for quite some time. AJ Styles is one of them. I think AJ and myself would have a really good run together. Finn Balor. Think I'd have a really good run with Finn.

Mysterio also addressed whether he'd want to return to the main roster, or as part of the Cruiserweight Division:

You know there've been a lot of names thrown around there. If Rey comes back, would he be part of the 205? Would he be part of the Cruiserweight Division? It's just hard to say. I think whatever the fans wanna see...if I do come back, that's what we'll give them.

What's next?

Next up is Mysterio's NJPW appearance. It seems like it's just a one-off affair. Also, Mysterio does sound like a WWE run is something he is strongly considering.

Author's take

I was part of a conference call with Konnan where he maintained that Mysterio would never join any place full time, at this point in his wrestling career. Even in a part-time role, Mysterio could be an invaluable addition to any roster in any promotion.

And yes, I'd love to see Rey Mysterio mix it up with Balor or Styles.
