What’s the story?

In a recent interview with The Mirror, Rey Mysterio opened up on a myriad of topics.

Mysterio asserted his happiness at returning to the WWE and competing in the 2018 Men’s Royal Rumble match. Besides, Mysterio also spoke about hitting a trio of top WWE superstars with the 619 in the ‘Rumble, while also teasing a potential WWE comeback.

In case you didn’t know…

Rey Mysterio has performed for several notable professional wrestling promotions over the course of his long and storied career.

While Mysterio competed in the WWE from 2002 to 2015, he parted ways with the company in ’15 and has since competed in organisations such as Lucha Underground and AAA. Mysterio returned to the WWE for a one-off performance at the Royal Rumble last month—a comeback that’s received considerably positive feedback from both fans and critics alike.

The heart of the matter

Addressing the highly positive response from the WWE Universe at the 2018 Royal Rumble, Rey Mysterio stated that he’s thankful for their loyalty and respect for being a Rey Mysterio fan. The former WWE Champion also thanked the newer generation of fans, who’ve only watched him on the WWE Network and had never seen him competing in today’s WWE before the ‘Rumble, for being a part of his experience.

Additionally, Mysterio opened up on what it was like to hit three of the WWE’s biggest current superstars Roman Reigns, John Cena & The Miz with the 619 at the Royal Rumble. In reference to the same, he added that there aren't many instances where past and present generations in WWE wrestle each other in the ring, and that segment could indeed lead to something else in the future.

Furthermore, Mysterio opened up on his ongoing discussions with WWE for a potential return.

“I want to say that there is a big possibility that I will be back. (We're) figuring out what the situation is, you know from both ends. But there is definitely a positive feedback on behalf of the fans, on behalf of the WWE staff and behalf of myself man. I think we're possibly going to sit down and negotiate something where we can both work together and have a good time and enjoy.”

What’s next?

The vast majority of professional wrestling industry experts believe that Rey Mysterio is set to return to the WWE this year.

Mysterio’s negotiations with Impact Wrestling fell through a few weeks ago, and fans can expect Mysterio to make a WWE comeback, albeit likely as a part-timer.

Author’s take

Rey Mysterio is one of the greatest Luchadors of all time—and it wouldn’t be hyperbole to say that “he’s still got it!”.

Mysterio could truly serve as a veteran presence on the WWE’s SmackDown brand right now, and given that we’re on the Road to Wrestlemania, perhaps his feud with a certain Viper could reignite once again.
