What's the story?

Rey Mysterio was recently interviewed by ESPN, where he talked about a possible return to WWE and opined about 205 Live's lack of popularity.

In case you didn't know...

Rey Mysterio was one of the best cruiserweight wrestlers on WCW, and later WWE. Mysterio is recognised to be one of the pioneers of the high-flying style of wrestling, that is so popular today. He had a successful career in WWE and was one of the most popular superstars on the roster in the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression Eras. His matches against the likes of the late Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle are legendary.

He left WWE in 2015 when he became unable to continue with the rigorous schedule of the company with age. He currently works in Lucha Underground and the Independent Circuit, though he has revealed that he is not locked down by any contract that would make a WWE return impossible.

The heart of the matter

Mysterio talked to ESPN about WWE's cruiserweight brand, 205 Live. He said that he did not see why 205 Live was not more popular, revealing that he thought the current Cruiserweight stars to be talented.

He speculated that the reason there might be limits on how far the talents are allowed to go in the matches, saying that there were no such limits on Lucha Underground. Mysterio said that there were no restrictions on what a wrestler could do on Lucha Underground and this allowed him to put on good matches.

"I don’t know if they’re limited to doing so much in the ring that they don’t go all out versus Lucha Underground. It’s Johnny Mundo versus Rey Mysterio and 15 minutes. We’ll go ahead and tear the house down without limitation.
We’ll be coming up with new moves and still trying to innovate the game."

He went on to talk about the fact that the Cruiserweight Stars were just doing what the rest of the roster was doing. When Mysterio had started it, there was no one else in the world who performed the same style of wrestling.

He went on to point towards Ricochet and Will Ospreay and said that they were innovating the wrestling business now, in the same way, Rey had back when he was in WCW. He speculated that if the 205 Live wrestlers were allowed more freedom in their offence, they would get a better reaction from the fans.

"I think if they just let the guys from [205 Live] go a little bit more, feel free to do whatever they want to do, maybe they might get a different reaction. I could be wrong."

What's next?

The Royal Rumble is coming up in a month's time, and it has often been used as a platform for wrestlers to make their returns to WWE. Fans may see Rey Mysterio return to the company with a lighter schedule.

Author's take

Rey Mysterio changed the way wrestling was perceived back in his day. The Cruiserweights are quite possibly restricted from going all out in the ring. With restrictions such as this, it would be difficult for anyone to get the 205 Live brand more over with the fans.
