What's the story?

Roman Reigns recently appeared on the Inside the Ropes podcast and talked about what it meant to him to have been able to face the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 33 and possibly be his last ever opponent in the ring.

In case you didn't know....

Roman Reigns faced the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 33 in the main event. He was able to win the match and pinned the Undertaker. After the match was complete, Undertaker left the ring and his wrestling gear inside the ring in a gesture of a possible final farewell to WWE and the fans.

Roman had the honour of being the final wrestler who met Undertaker in the ring and bringing an end to the storied career of the Phenom.

The heart of the matter

Roman Reigns opened up about the incident and said that he felt that it was an honour for him to be able to face the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 33. He talked about how new a generation was in WWE many of whom never faced Undertaker, Triple H or Shawn Michaels in the ring.

He felt that he was blessed to have had that opportunity to be in the ring with the older WWE legends, and said that he was able to learn from the experiences.

“It was a great honour. We have a whole new generation here. We have a young generation of talent coming up and it’s going to get to a point one day where there’s only a handful of us that can say yeah, I’ve been in the ring with John Cena, I’ve been in the ring with Randy Orton, I’ve been in the ring with the Undertaker, with Shawn Michaels, with Kurt Angle, with Triple H."

He continued on the topic and said that during his match with the Undertaker he felt the respect that the Phenom had for the business, as well as the responsibility, is entailed. Roman felt that after the matches he had with different Legends they were finally able to take a breath as they felt relief after the match.

"The times that I’ve wrestled these legends, these guys who have plugged in all this time, you could see a sense of relief on their faces after the match. They could finally take a breath for once. And for me, I know that’s quite the responsibility.”

Roman seemed to feel that the WWE legends were finally able to unburden the responsibilities on his shoulder and that it was his turn to take on the mantle and to help carry the business.

What's next?

Roman Reigns reunited with his Shield brethren, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins to reform the Shield. He is set to face the Miz, Cesaro and Sheamus, as well as Braun Strowman at TLC in a 4 on 3 Tables, Ladders and Chairs handicap match.

Author's take

Whether the fans like it or not, WWE is going to make Roman Reigns one of the Big stars who they build their company around. Reigns seems to feel that he has taken up that mantle as he has had several big wins against Triple H, Undertaker as well as John Cena.

If Roman is to be the face of the company he has to work more to be properly liked by the fans. The booking has not been in his favour in that concern as the fans felt that he was being forced on them. With the newly reunited Shield, however, Roman was properly cheered by the WWE Universe in a long time on Raw. He will hope that this is a trend that will continue.
