If people have missed the ongoing storyline between Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens, it just took another huge turn during the semifinal King of the Ring match between McMahon and Chad Gable. After McMahon chose himself as a replacement for an injured Elias, he then forced Kevin Owens to be the special referee for the match.

It kept the tension going between the two rivals as both men have been taking some time away from their feud. As a reminder, however, McMahon dangled a possible rescinding of Owens' $100,000 fine if Owens played ball.

During the match, Owens did his job. Gable picked up a quick 1-2-3 with a German Suplex. We all thought that Gable had advanced, but McMahon restarted the match as a best 2-out-of-3 falls bout. After the match restarted, Owens counted slowly every time McMahon was pinned, frustrating Gable even more.

Even that tactic didn't work as Gable forced Shane to tap out with an Angle lock submission. With that, the finals were set for next Monday's WWE RAW between Gable and Baron Corbin.

But after the match, even more tension boiled over between Owens and McMahon. Reacting like an angry child would, Shane assaulted Owens and dropped him to the canvas. He grabbed a mic and then proceeded to fire Owens after the match.

While Owens was merely doing his job, McMahon abused his power once again. It was just the latest in a long line of abuses ever since he turned on the Miz prior to WrestleMania 35. During the entire feud, McMahon has made Owens jump through hoops just to keep his job. Owens got so tired of those tactics that he agreed to quit had he lost at SummerSlam. He won at the Biggest Party of the Summer, but there were no consequences attached had Shane lost.

Will that change circumstances going forward? Are the two rivals headed for a final showdown with one person leaving TV? It would make the best sense for Shane to finally get away from TV, and with the move to Fox looming next month, this might lead to Shane finally going away.
