What's the story?

Following his appearance as the special guest referee in the Drew Mcintyre vs Adam Cole NXT Title match at the San Antonio, Texas, house show, Shawn Michaels took to the microphone to end the show by saying he was 'too old' for one more match.

In case you didn't know...

Shawn Michaels has taken on a hands-on role with the NXT Superstars and has been accompanying them on their recent tour of America, working closely with NXT Superstar Johnny Gargano via videos on social media and is due to have a social-media based ab-off with Johnny Wrestling during TakeOver: WarGames.

However, at San Antonio, Michaels would take on his first in-ring role in quite some time as the special guest referee in the main event title match. During the match Adam Cole's Undisputed ERA's teammates, Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish, interfered, dragging Michaels to the outside, with O'Reilly earning a Sweet Chin Music for his involvement.

The heart of the matter

The finish came with Drew Mcintyre hitting a spinning Futureshock DDT, followed up with a brutal Claymore running knee to put Adam Cole away, with Michaels dutifully conducting the three count after helping to remove the distraction of the other Undisputed ERA members.

After the match, Drew McIntyre and Michaels embraced in the ring, both men were worn out from the action, but Michaels took to the microphone and addressed the crowd. Here is a clip from his promo:

Social media reacts

Naturally, the WWE fans in attendance at NXT SanAntonio were blown away by 'The Heartbreak Kids' appearance, recognising it as a truly special moment

As you can see, Shawn Michaels truly helped to make the final NXT house show before NXT TakeOver: WarGames feel like a big moment, helped in part by the WWE's desire to outdo the Ring of Honor card taking place in the same city.

Author's take

Michaels took a bump and hit his finishing move. That's about on par with what Brock Lesnar does and he's the WWE Universal Champion, so I must echo the sentiments of people on social media: Shawn Michaels, you are not too old for this.
