WWE News: SmackDown Women’s Championship match shifted to WrestleMania main card

Alexa Bliss will have her work cut out at WM 33 as she defends her title against multiple opponents

What’s the story?

As reported by Cageside Seats, the SmackDown Women’s Championship match involving multiple female superstars from the blue brand’s roster has been moved to the WrestleMania 33 main card.

In case you didn’t know…

This week’s episode of SmackDown Live witnessed a thrilling segment involving the show’s women’s division. What initially started as a singles match between Becky Lynch and Carmella transformed into a tag match as SmackDown Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss and Mickie James brought their fight to the ring.

An interference from Natalya allowed Bliss and Carmella to pick up the win, which was followed by the three of them attacking ‘The Irish Lass Kicker’ and James. The odds were evened, though, when Naomi made a surprise appearance and took out the champion, Natalya and Carmella. Post that, the returning superstar announced her entry into the SmackDown Women’s Championship match at WM 33.

The heart of the matter

According to the plans revealed by the WWE on their website earlier, the two-hour WrestleMania kickoff show was supposed to feature three matches – the Cruiserweight Championship match, the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal and the SD Women’s Championship match.

However, they received a lot of criticism from fans over social media for putting the match, which will see Alexa Bliss defend her title against every available woman from the SmackDown Live roster, on the pay-per-view’s pre-show. A hashtag #GiveSDWomenAChance was created where the WWE Universe expressed their displeasure about the decision.

This backlash from the fans has paid off as the WWE have heard their voice and shifted the SmackDown Women’s Championship match to the main card. Becky Lynch, who is one of the participants in the match, posted the following tweet thanking the WWE Universe for making the change happen.

Author’s Take

It is good to see that the WWE reacted positively to the resentment of the fans over the SmackDown Women’s Championship match as it would certainly have been unfair on the blue brand’s women division to feature on the kickoff show for WrestleMania.
