WWE News: Huge update on injured superstar's status for Backlash weekend

#DIY will take to the ring against the Authors of Pain on Saturday for NXT TakeOver: Chicago

What’s the story?

In a recent post on Twitter, Wrestling Observer reported that Triple H gave an update on Tommaso Ciampa’s injury after being asked by Raj Giri of WrestlingInc. Hunter said that Ciampa had sprained his ankle but did not have a fracture.

Triple H is hopeful of having Ciampa compete on Saturday at NXT TakeOver: Chicago against the Authors of Pain in a tag team encounter.

In case you didn’t know...

One-half of the former NXT Tag Team Champions, Tommaso Ciampa suffered an injury this past week at a live event in Kentucky. Ciampa was in a tag team match with Johnny Gargano against SAnitY members Eric Young and Alexander Wolfe.

The heart of the matter

During a pre-TakeOver conference call, Triple H clarified that Ciampa’s injury was an ankle sprain. Triple H mentioned that he is feeling better and the match is still on for the event in Chicago. Triple H, however, revealed that if the prognosis worsened, then they would look for possible alternatives.

The injury occurred when Ciampa went for a leaping knee attack on the outside of the ring, where Eric Young and Wolfe were set up. The referee immediately ran over and put up the fateful ‘X’ sign and the match was ended in a no contest.

What’s next?

#DIY are slated for a hellacious ladder match against the Authors of Pain for NXT TakeOver: Chicago. However, the question remains as to how Ciampa will fare in such a demanding matchup with an injury. There are no changes to the match as of this writing but the condition of Ciampa’s injury still leaves the fate of the NXT Championships hanging in the balance.

Author's Take

If Ciampa does compete in the match, he will be heavily protected so as to not aggravate his injury. This incident brings to mind a time back in the day when Road Warrior Hawk wrestled a tag team scaffold match against the Midnight Express for the NWA with a broken ankle. It would be interesting to witness how the unstoppable and vicious Authors of Pain take to Ciampa’s injury during the match.
