WWE News: When Hulk Hogan And Randy Savage became friends
What's the story?
Hulk Hogan and "Macho Man" Randy Savage were pretty close but they didn't start out that way. Bruce Prichard recently talked about when Hogan and Savage's friendship started to grow on Something To Wrestle With.
In case you didn't know...
Hulk Hogan was the biggest star in professional wrestling by the time he formed The Mega Powers with "Macho Man" Randy Savage. When Hogan ran down to save Savage it caused a storm in the WWF and the Mega Powers were born.
The two would soon collide but during that time it turns out a friendship was blossoming behind the scenes.
The heart of the matter
When Randy Savage took his place in the 2015 class of the WWE Hall Of Fame he was inducted by Hulk Hogan. Unfortunately, Savage's brother Lanny Poffo had to accept the honour for him because The Macho Man sadly passed away in 2011.
But before he died he was able to form a bond with Hulk Hogan that lasted for years. Bruce Prichard explained when this friendship started during the height of Hulkamania. Thanks to Still Real To Us for the transcription.
"To the best of my knowledge, I remember them being friendly. I don't know that they were the best friends in the whole wide world. They became that way later on actually as the Mega Powers grew and the story line grew they became friends."
Bruce went on to give a little bit more clarity on the state of Hulk Hogan's career at the time. The Hulkster was quickly becoming a household name and his star power was rising quickly to the top of not only the pro wrestling business but pop culture in general.
"At this time (in 1987) you know, two guys. Hogan was Hogan. He was on another stratosphere especially in 1987 coming off the heels of WrestleMania III. And you're always looking for the next guy. Who's gonna be that next big guy to step in? So yeah, I think they were friendly but I don't remember them being best buds, hanging out."
It's not surprising to hear due to his overwhelming fame Hulk Hogan was unable to maintain a really close relationship with Randy Savage. But through the years The Hulkster and Macho Man developed a tight bond by working together in so many settings.
Hulk Hogan still speaks of his old friend fondly when telling stories about Savage's unique personality. The two owed a lot to each other through the years and created plenty of memories which remain some fans' favourite parts during that era of sports entertainment.
It's a shame Randy Savage is no longer with us. He was such an incredible character with charisma for days. His legacy will live on to tell the amazing stories he created as a part of pro wrestling history. He was a part of memorable moments, incredible incidents, and stunning surprises. It turns out he also made a few friends along the way.
