WWE News: WWE confirms huge Australia event for October

What’s the story?

As rumored back in December, then followed up this week, WWE will be holding a massive event in Australia this year, with more details to follow.

Upon confirming the greatest Royal Rumble event in Saudi Arabia on Raw tonight, Michael Cole confirmed the Australia event for October, too, with more details to follow.

In case you didn’t know…

Australian newspaper The Herald Sun leaked the news earlier this week - with a prospective date of October, rumored names and a confirmation of when the announcement will be made all being reported.

The location is heavily rumored to be the Melbourne Cricket Ground with a capacity of over 100,000. Hence, if sold out, the event could come close to WWE's current record attendance set at Wrestlemania 32 in Dallas, Texas when 101,763 fans were in attendance.

The two nearest to this would be easily dwarfed with WrestleMania 3, which took place in Pontiac, Michigan, drawing 93,173 fans, and Wrestlemania 29 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, drawing 80,676 fans.

The largest WWE attendance outside of the USA was at SummerSlam '92 in London, England at 80,355.

Funnily enough, the current record holder for a similar event in Australia is held by a current WWE Superstar when UFC 193 amassed an audience of 56,214 in Australia, an event which saw Ronda Rousey compete against Holly Holm.

The heart of the matter

WWE were keeping their cards close to their chest here, but the event was confirmed on WWE Raw last night.

It had previously been reported that Australia's MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) was looking to host more big events with WWE interested in going down under for a pay-per-view. The MCG is the 10th largest stadium in the world,

The Herald Sun then reported that the WWE has partnered up with Visit Victoria to put on a show in October with many of WWE's big names such as John Cena, The Undertaker, and Rey Mysterio, who has not yet officially signed for WWE, said to be taking part.

What’s next?

Well, it looks like WWE really is expanding with huge events set for Saudi Arabia and Australia now.

I guess we may need to wait for more details on this, but they will definitely come thick and fast after WrestleMania 34 is out the way, unless the Australian press gives us some more hints, of course.

Author’s take

This is incredibly ambitious for WWE, but that isn't something we've ever known them to shy away from.

It'll be very interesting if WWE approach this like Beast In The East and make it a Network special, running at local Australian time and it would be really cool to see WWE's Australian Superstars get a spot on the card. They have it in abundance with Buddy Murphy, The Iconic Duo of Billie Kay & Peyton Royce, and TM-61's Shane Thorne & Nick Miller.
