What’s the story?
As per public records supplied by the United States Patent and Trademark office, WWE has filed trademarks for Superstars Hoho Lun, Tyler Bate, Mustafa Ali and TJP (TJ Perkins). WWE have also filed for a trademark for Jinder Mahal’s pseudonym “The Maharajah”.
In case you didn’t know...
Hoho Lun, Tyler Bate and Mustafa Ali are all Superstars that have recently been signed by the WWE to permanent contracts. Whenever new Superstars generally sign up with the WWE, the company files for a trademark on the names of their characters so that they could be used for various purposes with no conflict of interest.
The company also file for trademarks whenever a Superstar has a name change, or if they’re given a new moniker in addition to their wrestling name.
The heart of the matter
While Hoho Lun, Tyler Bate and Mustafa Ali are new Superstars on the WWE roster, the monikers “TJP” and “The Maharajah” have been trademarked too. WWE already holds trademarks for “TJ Perkins” and “Jinder Mahal” and have now chosen to trademark the monikers as well, in an effort to cover all bases in terms of the characters.

The filings have been done with the United States Patent and Trademark office and the “Goods and Services” section of the filings describes the nature of the trademark as:
IC 041. US 100 101 107. G & S: Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment via an online community portal.
Providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information; fan club services, namely, organizing and staging events with wrestling fan club members; providing online newsletters in the fields of sports entertainment; online journals, namely, blogs, in the fields of sports entertainment.
The attorney on record on all five filings is WWE’s Senior Vice President of Intellectual property, Lauren Dienes-Middlen, with the “Owner” of the trademarks being specified as “World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.”, with the Connecticut corporate address of the company listed as well.
The filings were done on April 25th, 2017 for “The Maharajah”, April 28th for Tyler Bate, Hoho Lun and Mustafa Ali and April 30th for “TJP”.
Besides this, the WWE have also dropped their trademark for Tajiri, following the Japanese wrestler’s departure from the company last month.
What’s next?
From the nature of the filings, one can naturally assume that all the five wrestlers are going to play a significant part in WWE’s future plans. Jinder Mahal’s “Maharajah” moniker and TJ Perkins’ “TJP” pseudonym are probably going to be used for merchandising purposes as well.

Besides standard corporate procedure, the one thing that stands out to me in this development is the fact that the WWE have gone ahead and trademarked “The Maharajah” for Jinder Mahal’s new character.
It can only mean good things for Jinder Mahal and his push doesn’t look like it is coming to an end anytime soon, all the more reason to rejoice for his fans!
