What’s the story?
The WWE has put forth a “WWE Fantasy Warfare” video; teasing a potential match between AJ Styles and Rey Mysterio.
Apparently, the rumored matchup, AJ Styles vs. Rey Mysterio is now being considered, amidst rumors of Mysterio potentially returning to the WWE this year.
In case you didn’t know…
AJ Styles rose to prominence for his work in TNA (now Impact Wrestling) and has been competing in the WWE since 2016.
On the other hand, Rey Mysterio has wrestled in several notable promotions such as ECW, WCW, AAA, and most recently NJPW. Mysterio has previously held the WWE Championship among other accolades.
The heart of the matter
The WWE has often teased upcoming feuds/storylines on its WWE Fantasy Warfare platform—a game mode in the WWE All Stars video game. Most prominently, the WWE teased Bill Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar back in 2016, something that came to fruition at Survivor Series 2016, as Goldberg defeated Lesnar; with the feud culminating when he was beaten by the latter at Wrestlemania 33 in 2017.
Rey Mysterio made a surprise return to the WWE; partaking in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match last month; following which, both professional wrestling fans & critics have been speculating as to whether he could return to the WWE for more matches/feuds.
One ought to note that Mysterio is presently involved in a one-off feud in NJPW against Jushin “Thunder” Liger, however, experts believe that he’s likely to return to the WWE very soon. Furthermore, Mysterio teased a feud with WWE Champion AJ Styles a few days ago, which in turn has served to further fuel speculation of ‘The Master of the 619’ facing ‘The Phenomenal One’ in WWE.
What’s next?
Rey Mysterio is expected to perform against Jushin “Thunder” Liger in NJPW in the days to come, after which he’s likely to return to the WWE.
Meanwhile, WWE Champion AJ Styles is set to defend his title in a Fatal 5-Way Match against Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Baron Corbin & Dolph Ziggler at WWE Fastlane; with the event taking place on March 11th.

Honestly speaking, the WWE does indeed seem to be building towards a future showdown between AJ Styles and Rey Mysterio.
Mysterio will be done with his brief NJPW rivalry with Jushin Liger over the next few weeks, and perhaps the legendary Luchador could commence a feud with Styles after Fastlane.
