What's the story?

The New Day is one of WWE's most popular stables to ever come out of the company. The trio of Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods have broken records and entertained the WWE Universe for years with their incredible wars over the tag team titles. So it's interesting to know that the group was Woods' last shot in the company.

In case you didn't know...

Prior to the formation of the New Day, Xavier Woods was essentially a nobody on the main roster. He rarely competed, and when he did he got crushed by whoever the company was focusing on. While he was incredibly talented, it seemed that the WWE just didn't have anything for him.

At some point, he managed to talk Kofi Kingston, an established vet and one of the most decorated superstars in the company, and Big E, another up and comer who was already a former Intercontinental Champion, into forming a group in hopes of getting noticed.

While it seemed to be dead in the water at first, with the group rarely getting a response from the crowd, fans began chanting "New Day Sucks". Eventually, they'd become a truly hated team, managing to do something the WWE brass never imagined...turning Kofi Kingston heel.

The heart of the matter

Xavier Woods was a recent guest on Corridor Digital's Corridor Cast and revealed what he had to do to get a chance with the New Day. Essentially, he wagered his whole WWE career with the man himself, Vince McMahon, on the basis that they could get the fans to boo Kingston, who had been a face since he joined the company.

Woods delved into how disappointed and, essentially, depressed he was in his role with the WWE prior to the New Day, and the group was his last-ditch effort to make a name in history. He said that if the group did fail, he would leave because he didn't deserve to be there.

We went to Vince McMahon, and I was like, 'If you give me a microphone for four weeks in a row, I guarantee you they'll boo Kofi Kingston.' He was like, 'Four weeks? And if you don't do it in four weeks, what happens?' I said, 'If I don't do it in four weeks, you've got sixty guys in developmental who deserve this spot more than I do.'

McMahon accepted Woods' proposal, and the rest is history. By week three, fans had turned on the multi-time champion, and the group was on its way to becoming one of the greatest stables in WWE history.

What's next?

The New Day has dominated the WWE's Tag Division, both on Raw and SmackDown Live, and today will get a chance to challenge for a World Title shot at WrestleMania. All they have to do is survive the Royal Rumble.

The Royal Rumble takes place tonight, starting at 7 p.m. ET on the WWE Network.
