What’s the story?

Legendary commentator Jim Ross has been a part of the wrestling business for well over 40 years and is also considered the greatest announcer of all time. Earlier this year, Ross made a return to the WWE and he has called many matches for the company since then, and is also currently working under the NJPW banner.

Jim Ross recently sat down to have an interview with AV Club, where he discussed a host of topics including his recent favourite match that he has commentated on.

In case you didn’t know…

Jim Ross has been a wrestling commentator for almost 40 years now. Ross was first signed by WWE in 1993 and he has been a part of the company for two decades, before eventually leaving in 2013.

Earlier this year, he signed a two-year deal and made a return to Vince McMahon’s company. He called the Wrestlemania 33 main event as well as the first ever Mae Young Classic, alongside Lita.

JR is also currently working for New Japan Pro Wrestling, where he has become the lead announcer for the company’s weekly program on AXS TV.

The heart of the matter

During his interview with AV Club, JR revealed that he was privileged of having the chance to call all three matches between Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega, but he claimed that his favourite was the bout between the two men at Dominion 6.11. JR also said that this was his most favourite match that he has called in recent times.

JR was then asked that if the second match between Okada and Omega was the best match he has ever seen, to which he responded that it is right up there alongside the Ric Flair vs Ricky Steamboat match from 1989. Ross added that both the trilogies (Omega vs Okada and Flair vs Steamboat) were phenomenal, and there is nothing a true wrestling fan can complain about.

JR also stated that he was also honoured to call the match between Kenny Omega and Tomohiro Ishii at Long Beach, where Omega was crowned the first ever IWGP US Heavyweight Champion.

What’s next?

Ross currently continues to work with WWE, NJPW and also works occasionally on the Independent scene.

It was also been rumoured that JR is open to call a match at the next NXT Takeover; Takeover: War Games.

Author’s take

If there’s anyone who can work for the two biggest wrestling companies on the planet at the same time, then it’s Jim Ross. It is great to see Ross calling matches such as Omega vs Okada as well as Reigns vs Undertaker, at the same time.

Personally, I appreciate the fact that JR does not compare Omega vs Okada with other top wrestling matches, and equally, enjoys all of the bouts, which exactly how a true wrestling fan’s mindset should be.
