Rey Mysterio has challenged Jushin "Thunder" Liger to a one-on-one match

What’s the story?

During today’s NJPW: New Beginning in Osaka show, former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Pro Wrestling legend Rey Mysterio shocked the entire world when he appeared in a vignette and decided to challenge NJPW veteran Jushin “Thunder” Liger to a one-on-one match.

In case you didn’t know…

As noted during last month’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view, Rey Mysterio sent the entire WWE Universe and the Pro Wrestling world into a frenzy when the masked luchador made a surprise return to the WWE, as a special entrant at this year’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

Upon his return to WWE, there were many speculations regarding Rey’s current status with the company, however, Mysterio himself would, later on, confirm for the fact that his return at the Royal Rumble was just a one-off thing.

The heart of the matter

In a shocking turn of events earlier today in Osaka, former three-time WWE World Champion Rey Mysterio appeared in a surprising video package and challenged NJPW’s veteran Junior Heavyweight, Jushin “Thunder” Liger to a singles match at this year’s NJPW: Strong Style Evolved pay-per-view.

As noted, Jushin “Thunder” Liger, who was sitting on JP commentary tonight, would immediately go on to accept Mysterio’s challenge and the two legends will now collide at this year’s Strong Style Evolve show at the Long Beach in California

What’s next?

The Strong Style Evolved event is already been sold out and the show is scheduled to take place on the 25th of March at the Walter Pyramid in New Beach, California. Additionally, it was also confirmed that the PPV will be aired live on AXS TV.

Author’s Take

As of lately, NJPW has been pulling off all kind of surprises, as noted during last year’s Power Struggle PPV, Mysterio’s WWE colleague Chris Jericho shockingly decided to appear in NJPW and challenged Kenny Omega to a match at this year’s Wrestle Kingdom show.

Also, a match between Rey Mysterio and Jushin “Thunder” Liger will be a dream come true for every single Pro Wrestling fan around the world and there is no doubt that this match will be an instant classic. The two men have also previously collided in WCW during Starrcade 1996.
