What's the story?
Recently, WWE shocked everyone by announcing that Shawn Michaels would be returning to a WWE ring within the next few months as the special guest referee in an NXT Title match between Drew McIntyre and the Undisputed ERA's Adam Cole.
However, it seems that Mr. Wrestlemania's involvement isn't just a one-off thing as he recently revealed, via Twitter, that he's tagged along for NXT's current tour.
In case you didn't know...
Twitter went into a frenzy as the WWE announced that Michaels would be setting foot inside a WWE ring the night before NXT TakeOver: WarGames.
The announcement came out of the blue, as usually a 'special guest' referee spot has some sort of build-up or match justification, but I haven't seen anyone complaining about Michaels' impromptu addition to the Drew McIntyre vs Adam Cole NXT Title match, and why would they?
The heart of the matter
Shawn Michaels posted a video of himself with popular NXT star Johnny Gargano in a bid to help Gargano 'get back on track' following his recent losses on the yellow brand. During the video, Michaels announced that he was touring with NXT, listing a number cities that he'd be visiting.
This probably means that on the tour there will be some build between Michaels, McIntyre and Adam Cole to justify Shawn's appearance as the referee for their match. But it also probably means that "Mr Wrestlemania" is working with the talent backstage in a training-capacity which can only be a good thing for the NXT Superstars.
What's next?
The match falls at an awkward time for NXT, coming a day before the scheduled title match between Drew McIntyre and Andrade "Cien" Almas, meaning that Michaels' involvement in it could change the landscape of NXT, and drastically alter NXT TakeOver: WarGames.
At the moment it's impossible to know if Shawn will call the match straight, or will side one way, or the other.
Author's take
Michaels seems to be using his star power to help NXT along a bit, this video with Gargano and his special guest referee appearance at a house show seem to suggest that Triple H's longtime partner is helping to make NXT as good and as exciting as it can be.
Let's be honest, if Michaels is involved it's probably going to be great!
