WWE/NXT Spoiler: New NXT singles championship announced at TV tapings

There's a
There's a new belt coming to NXT...

What's the story?

It has been revealed tonight at WWE NXT's TV tapings that a new singles title is coming to the brand - The NXT North American Championship.

The inaugural Champion will be crowned at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans in a six-man Ladder Match - with all six of the names being revealed by PWInsider already.

In case you didn't know...

The NXT is pretty stacked - arguably more so than ever before - and, with only one male singles title up for grabs so far, a lot of talent has already passed through the "developmental" brand without ever winning gold.

With fans clamouring for another singles championship, the news is pretty monumental and was obviously well received. The new title will also add more depth to the programming, which is never a bad thing.

The Championship is the fourth on the yellow brand - with the NXT Championship, the NXT Women's Championship and the NXT Tag Team Championships currently active.

The heart of the matter

William Regal announced tonight that the new singles belt will be debuting in NXT soon, with the first ever NXT North American Champion being crowned at Takeover: New Orleans in a six-way Ladder Match.

PWInsider.com has confirmed that the ladder match to crown the inaugural champion will feature EC3, Killian Dain, Ricochet, Adam Cole, Lars Sullivan and Velveteen Dream.

What's next?

With NXT TakeOver: New Orleans just a month away, we won't need to wait too long to see both the Championship belt and the first ever NXT North American Champion.

NXT TakeOver: New Orleans takes place the Saturday before WrestleMania, April 7th, at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Author's take

Well, this is incredible news! New titles are always exciting, and this opens a whole new door for the Superstars of NXT.

With the main Champion on NXT usually having a dominant run with the belt, this could breathe a new lease of life into the yellow brand and ramp things ring up for TakeOver: New Orleans!

You do risk overkill with too many titles, and diluting the actual achievement of winning the belt, but I think this is a brilliant idea and I can't wait to see if it comes to fruition.
