WWE Rumors: Brock Lesnar may not defend the WWE Universal Championship at Payback

Brock Lesnar won the Universal Championship at Wrestlemania 33

What’s the story?

The Beast Incarnate won Raw’s top prize at Wrestlemania this past Sunday in Orlando, Florida. Though Brock Lesnar is now the Universal Champion, it doesn’t mean that he will work a full-time schedule.

In a recent report by Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, he stated that the Universal Champion may not be in action on the very first PPV after ‘Mania itself.

In case you didn’t know...

Brock Lesnar defeated Goldberg to win the Universal gold at the Showcase of the Immortals.

On the recent episode of Raw, Lesnar and Paul Heyman came out and spoke about the potential contenders who could challenge the Conqueror for the title. Heyman named a few worthy challengers but placed great emphasis on Roman Reigns.

They were interrupted by Braun Strowman who demanded a title shot. You can check the footage below:

The heart of the matter

Meltzer reported that Lesnar is not currently booked for the Payback PPV which will be held on the 30th of April. As teased on Raw, Braun Strowman is currently slated to be the first challenger to Brock’s Universal Championship. The match is speculated to take place at either Extreme Rules on 4th of June or Bad Blood on 9th of July.

It is further speculated that Reigns vs. Strowman will headline Payback to determine the #1 Contender for the Universal Championship. This match could also turn into a Fatal-4 way with the addition of Balor and Owens as they both are in line for a Universal Championship rematch.

Reigns vs. Lesnar may not take place in near future as it is being saved for a major PPV event.

What’s next?

There have been no announcements regarding the Universal Championship match for Payback yet. Strowman may revive his feud with Reigns in coming weeks as he spoke about it last week on Raw.

As of now, only Jericho vs. Owens for the United States Championship has been announced for the Payback PPV, which may get scrapped following Jericho’s injury angle on Raw.

Author’s take

It is sad to learn that the top Champion of Raw may not headline it’s first PPV after ’Mania. Brock Lesnar works a part-time schedule and charges a lot for each of his appearances, which could be the reason for him not appearing at Payback.

The PPV is still four weeks away and a lot can happen in that time. Lesnar may end up defending the Universal Championship at Payback as you can never say never in wrestling.
