WWE Rumors: Drew McIntyre's NXT deal wasn't finalised until the day of TakeOver: Orlando

The NXT Universe was shocked to see Drew McIntyre in attendance at Takeover...

What’s the story?

Dave Meltzer from the Wrestling Observer has reported that the deal to sign Drew McIntyre to NXT happened at the very last minute. McIntyre made a surprise appearance in the front row at NXT Takeover: Orlando last weekend much like Bobby Roode did the year before.

In case you didn’t know...

McIntyre was originally signed to the WWE late in 2006 and would go on to make his in-ring debut on an episode of Smackdown the following year. After a two-year stint in the developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling, Drew would make his main roster in 2009 dubbed as Vince McMahon’s “Chosen One”.

The heart of the matter

Around WrestleMania, there are normally a few members of the NXT roster that get the call-up to Monday Night Raw or SmackDown Live. This year was no exception as The Revival, Tye Dillinger, and Shinsuke Nakamura all made their debuts this week.

The addition of McIntyre helps bolster the main event scene for NXT and gives the current NXT Champion Bobby Roode a credible challenge.

What’s next?

Drew McIntyre will make his NXT return (he was in the tournament to crown the first NXT Champion in 2012) next week. The latest round of television tapings occurred last night and we can confirm that McIntyre had a match that will take place on the next episode.

Author’s take

This is a great chance for the WWE to finally get it right with Drew McIntyre. As The Chosen One, it seemed like he would be destined for the main event for years to come. Instead, he ended up in the joke faction 3MB.

When McIntyre signed with Impact Wrestling, he proved he is a main eventer. I have a very good feeling that he will be main eventing one or more Takeover events in 2017.
