What's the story?

WWE Superstars are once again allowed to use the term 'belts' when describing championship titles, according to a report from Dave Meltzer.

In case you didn't know...

Championship titles are the richest prizes in all of professional wrestling, and symbolise the very best wrestlers at the time.

Despite championship titles being represented as leather belts throughout WWE history, the word belt itself has been banned from being used, presumably as the term championship has a much grander meaning to it.

In recent years, the company had introduced several new titles, including the Universal and Women's Tag Team titles.

The heart of the matter

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said how the idea behind the change came down to WWE chairman Vince McMahon.

"It’s Vince. Vince is Vince. There’s no explanation on why he wants certain words and not want certain words and it changes. By the way, ‘belts’ are okay now, just so you know.”

“They’re actually doing advertising and things using the term belts now for things that involve championship belts. The word ‘belts’ is now back in the lexicon."

The change may be due to Becky Lynch, as The Man has referred to herself as 'Becky 2 Belts' after capturing the RAW and SmackDown Women's Championships at WrestleMania 35.

What's next?

Several title belts will be defended at the upcoming Money in the Bank.

Matches for the Universal and RAW Women's titles have already been announced as well as Men's and Women's Money in the Bank ladder matches.

WWE Money in the Bank 2019 will take place Sunday, May 19, at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
