From the WWE Rumor Mill: Several backstage officials not in favor of Charlotte Flair's 'face' turn

Charlotte Flair is a 4-time RAW Women’s Champion

What’s the story?

In the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Live, Dave Meltzer noted that a certain number of WWE officials are not in favour of Charlotte Flair’s recent ‘face’ turn. Due to such oppositions, there is a possibility that the former RAW Women’s Champion will be back as a heel character sooner than expected.

In case you didn’t know...

Charlotte Flair became exclusive to Smackdown Live after the ‘superstar shake up’ following WrestleMania 33. Within a week of arriving on the blue brand, she got involved in the Smackdown Women’s Championship picture, much to the displeasure of Natalya, Carmella and Tamina.

The newly formed The Welcoming Committee, therefore, attacked Flair and the Smackdown Women’s Champion Naomi during the title match, resulting in the ‘face’ turn of Charlotte.

The heart of the matter

Wrestling Observer reported that several WWE officials were in support of the heel character to continue, even after she arrived on the blue brand. They do not consider this at the perfect time to utilise Charlotte Flair as a fan-favorite.

The difference in ideas among the officials can result in a very short face run of Flair and she may be turning her back on Naomi and Becky Lynch very soon.

WWE has already teased the heel turn by depicting the increasing tension between Charlotte and Naomi on this week’s episode of the blue brand. In a backstage segment, Flair actually blamed the Smackdown Women’s Champion for costing Becky Lynch her match against Natalya and it was Lynch who had to step in to calm them down.

What’s next?

At the upcoming Smackdown-exclusive Backlash pay-per-view, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and the Smackdown Women’s Champion Naomi will be teaming up to face the trio of Natalya, Carmella and Tamina, also known as The Welcoming Committee.

Author’s Take

Charlotte has excelled in portraying both ‘face’ and ‘heel’ characters in her career. However, the negative persona helped her to establish herself as ‘The Queen’ of WWE and also aided in building up the impressive 16-0 WWE pay-per-view winning streak.

The recent changes in her character are indeed refreshing and to me, these are actually helping to build up the anticipation for the upcoming ‘heel’ turn.
