It seems someone could be ready for Asuka!
It seems someone could be ready for Asuka!

What's the story?

With Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Ronda Rousey dominating the proceedings, Asuka has relatively taken a backseat when it comes to the hype regarding the women's titles going into WrestleMania 35.

As revealed by Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE, though, has reportedly picked a very surprising opponent for the Smackdown Women's Champion for the Show of Shows and that name is none other than Lacey Evans.

In case you didn't know...

Evans made her official main roster debut at the Royal Rumble when she entered the Women's Rumble match at #1. The former NXT Superstar put in an impressive performance as she lasted for almost 30 mins before getting dumped out of the match by Charlotte.

She made unexpected non-wrestling appearances at Elimination Chamber and on this week's Raw's which have certainly kickstarted talks regarding the potential plans.

The heart of the matter

Dave Meltzer revealed that the backstage plan currently is to have Evans face the Empress of Tomorrow for the SmackDown Women's Championship at the grandest stage of them all.

Asuka vs Evans was reportedly pitched a while back but WWE had dropped the plan only to reignite it as of this writing. Nothing is set in stone as of yet but the match seems like the most likely option to get the green signal.

The SmackDown Women's Champion has been kept off television as creative didn't think it made sense for Asuka to show up without a concrete storyline in place.

In the meantime, WWE has attempted at introducing Evans as the 'next big thing' by having her make ambiguous appearances. Rumors suggest that the plans for Evans are 'super big' and that the company wants the fans to realize that she will be a pivotal part of the women's division going forward. The 'classy' cameos of Evans are aimed at slowly familiarising the fans with the 28-year-old talent.

What's next?

We should get some clarity on the situation on this week's SmackDown, however, Evans vs. Asuka seems like a lock considering all the incoming backstage reports.
