The F1 penalty points claimed its first victim last season when Kevin Magnussen crossed the threshold of 12 points. The Danish driver was subsequently banned, and we had the first instance of the FIA drawing a line when it came to driving standards.
The penalty points system was introduced in 2014 to keep the driving standards in check. Every time a driver commits a transgression on the track, he is handed penalty points. These penalty points would stay with the driver for a period of 12 months. If a driver ends up accruing 12 F1 penalty points, he's banned for a race.
