5 things that WWE are doing wrong with their divas division

Don’t get me wrong, the diva’s division has a lot of potential with talent like AJ Lee, Paige, Natalya, Naomi and even more new young performers down in NXT waiting for a call up such as Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Bayley. But for some reason, WWE aren’t capitalising on this potential and are instead destroying their own division. This becomes even more obvious when their developmental program, NXT clearly are capitalising on opportunities and their women’s division is thriving. Let’s take a look now at five things that WWE are doing wrong with their own diva’s division.

#1 Short matches

If WWE continually choose to book their women in ridiculously short 2 minute matches, it’s impossible for fans to become invested in the action. This doesn’t give them anywhere near enough time to prove that they can actually put on an entertaining match.

The lack of time given to the females tells the audience that WWE officials place a severe lack of importance on their diva’s division, which is not the message they should be trying to send.

Not to mention, the constant use of the rollup finish that has become far too overused.

When they are given time, they excel and produce top quality bouts. One just has to look at the NXT women’s division to see that when given more time they can create interesting and enthralling match ups.

#2 Poor build ups

Another factor that harper the main roster divas bouts is a lack of solid build ups. If WWE doesn’t put any effort in to creating meaningful and intriguing feuds than fans can’t get truly invested in the matches.

WWE needs to work on building up significant and important feuds for their divas division instead of stringing together short throw away bouts that do nothing to further the storyline.

The ‘AJ v Paige’ feud last year was very promising and should have been huge but a poor build up among other factors made the entire program a semi-flop. There have also been many others such as the ‘Naomi v Cameron’ feud which was never destined for greatness but a weak build never even gave it a chance to shine.

WWE also need to stop using Total Divas as a source for boring and meaningless storylines.

#3 Too many models

WWE has a far to heavy reliance on wanting their divas to have a ‘model’ look or even straight out hiring models who clearly have little to no talent such as Eva Marie. WWE shouldn’t really care what they look like (within reason) and instead focus on their wrestling ability.

However the most ridiculous and actually quite devastating example of this comes from a recent rumoured report from the ‘Wrestling Observer’ in regards to NXT star Charlotte. According to the report, despite her amazing performances on NXT she still has detractors on the main roster. The main criticism being that she is very tall/muscular and doesn’t possess the typical ‘diva look’.

If this is indeed true, then it is one of the most disturbing and worrying things I have heard in regard to women’s wrestling. Charlotte is an incredible wrestler and could outperform most of the current roster.

WWE needs to wake up and stop living in their own little fantasy world.

#4 Lack of direction

A lack of overall direction is another huge problem with the current diva’s division. Far too many feuds or storylines as well as characters themselves are not being given proper direction.

The ‘Bella Twins’ feud last year (which itself was very poor) was heading towards a sister v sister clash after Brie was made Nikki’s assistant. But then out of nowhere, Brie turned heel for no reason and without any explanation. Most fans were probably just happy that the weak twin feud was over.

Paige and Alicia Fox have both been the victims lately of a lack of direction. Fox was performing quite well in her character has a crazy loose cannon heel but then out of nowhere they pair her with a heel Paige, only to have her turn face almost straight away and start a short lacklustre feud with Paige. But now, only a few months later, Paige has returned to a face while it also appears Fox is now back to being a heel.

A constant lack of direction with characters and storylines is only going to continue to hurt the women on the main roster.

#5 Use of the term \'divas\'

The use of the term ‘diva’ is an interesting choice. Why would WWE get rid of their storied women’s championship in favour of the diva’s title?

The main roster is referred to as the diva’s division while NXT has a women’s champion and is called the women’s division.

There are currently a lot of pre-existing negative conations associated with diva’s matches, often referred to as ‘bathroom breaks’, due to the lack of importance placed by WWE over the years.

If WWE wants to change the attitude towards women’s wrestling, the first step could be to simply get rid of the diva’s title and instead bring back the women’s championship.

#6 Final Thoughts

Compare the NXT women’s division and the WWE divas division and they are light years ahead of the main roster.

NXT does possess a lot of talent, but the main roster has just as much talent, the only problem is that they don’t get properly utilized.

WWE main roster officials urgently need to take a close look at how NXT run their diva’s division because they could really afford to learn a thing or two.

It’s time for the WWE to wake up and start actively trying to improve their women’s wrestling by capitalizing on the massive potential they have sitting around going to waste.
