SummerSlam 2015: Top 5 performers in the history of the pay-per-view

Brock Lesnar

Brock LesnarThere aren’t many stages like SummerSlam where a WWE superstar can shine. It is a place where stars are born and anyone who makes a name for themselves at the pay-per-view is guaranteed a place in the history books. We are just hours away from another edition of the summer’s biggest pay-per-view and this year also, superstars will be looking to stand out from the rest. But before we see the rise of someone new at SummerSlam on Sunday, it would be a great idea to look back at all the superstars who came up with memorable performances at the show. So here are those superstars who stepped up their game at SummerSlam.

#5 Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar

Believe it or not, Brock Lesnar and SummerSlam is a deadly combination. Lesnar is known for coming with excellent matches at the pay-per-view and this year also, we could expect something from him at the show. Lesnar’s first major break at SummerSlam came against The Rock. The pay-per-view played host to his first title win that night and it marked the start of something special.

Brock then went on to have an epic match against Kurt Angle afterwards and years later when he returned, Brock locked horns with Triple H. The war that he had with CM Punk was another great example and most recently, Brock Lesnar destroyed John Cena at SummerSlam 2014 by taking the Cenation leader for a trip to Suplex City.

Did we omit anyone? Let us know in the comments.

#4 Triple H

Triple H

Over the course of his career, Triple H has attracted a lot of criticism. A portion of the WWE Universe still considers that he ‘slept’ his way to the top but then again, Triple H as a performer has been exceptional. SummerSlam, in particular, has been a good stage for Hunter. He has had a wide variety of matches at the show.

And by wide variety, I mean, street fights, ladder matches, tag team matches, cage matches, and of course, a match with the Great Khali. Triple H’s ability to adapt to all these gimmicks and all those workers prove that he deserves to be where he is now and Hunter deserves a place in the list for the same reason.

#3 John Cena

John Cena vs. Brock Lesna

There are a lot of complaints rising right now among the fans about Cena being in the WWE Championship scene again. It might be right to an extent but then again, with Cena’s reputation at SummerSlam, no one can blame WWE as well. Cena has been a work-horse when it comes to the pay-per-view.

It is pretty hard to find a bad SummerSlam match from the Cenation leader and the matches that he had through the years were standout ones as well. Last year, he took a beating from Lesnar and before that he had solid bouts with the likes of Daniel Bryan, Randy Orton, Edge and Batista. This year, he will face Seth Rollins and we can expect something similar from the US Champion.

#2 Bret Hart

Bret Hart vs. Jerry Lawler

Including Bret Hart in the list was an easy decision. The only question was about his position. He could have easily been on top of the list if it wasnt for the next superstar. Even now, the margin of difference between Hart and the next superstar is pretty slim. Speaking about Hart and SummerSlam, it has been a memorable pairing.

He had some great tag team bouts against Brain busters and the Demolition. Later in the midcard, Bret fought wars with Mr. Perfect and Davey Boy Smith for the Intercontinental Championship. If this was not enough, Bret had an epic steel cage match with his Brother Owen and this is still considered to be one of the best steel cage bouts. Bret also faced the Undertaker at SummerSlam and with such an impressive resume; it is hard to keep him out of here.

#1 Shawn Michaels

Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon

Shawn Michaels is called Mr. WrestleMania due to his incredible consistency and brilliance at the biggest stage of them all. And not surprisingly, Michaels has a good track record at SummerSlam as well. Michaels had a ladder match with Razor Ramon for the Intercontinental championship at the show and it is still the benchmark for ladder matches.

Decades later, he came in and faced Triple H in an unsanctioned street fight which overflowed with emotions. There were a lot of excellent matches between and after these two time frames and all of this makes Michaels one of the greatest performers in the history of SummerSlam. Unfortunately for us, Michaels hung up his boots years ago.
