WWE Royal Rumble 2016: 5 things that should happen at the pay-per-view

In need of a new direction

Lesnar is a frontrunner to win the RumbleThe amount of buzz that Royal Rumble creates is second only to WrestleMania. Known as the official start of the road to WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, unlike other pay-per-views, has a huge impact on the product. This very fact adds extra pressure on the shoulders of WWEs creative team. When a successful TLC managed to evoke curiosity among the fans, the Slammy Award edition of Raw did exactly the opposite.WWEs pattern of screwing up after a successful outing continued and it is not something they could afford at the Rumble. The pay-per-view should see some bold booking decisions and here is a look at them.

#5 A clear new direction for Wyatt Family

In need of a new direction

WWE’s attempt to put over Wyatt Family with the help of ECW veterans turned out to be a successful one. The faction needed this after their loss to the Brothers of destruction. This storyline, however, has run its course.

There is nothing more that the ECW originals could contribute and Wyatt Family should move on to better things. Wyatts are bound to be a huge force in the Rumble match.

Other entrants will struggle to get rid of them and they deserve such a strong booking. None of them might go on to win the whole thing, but Wyatt Family should walk out of the Rumble match with a new direction.

#4 Lengthy match between Divas

Should not be treated as a palate cleanser

From the looks of it, Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch for the Divas Championship will feature at Royal Rumble. Both Charlotte and Becky have the talent to put together a classic, but WWE should allow them to do so.

If we look back at the recent trend, WWE’s tendency has been to use Divas matches as palate cleansers – which should be avoided at the Rumble. The women should get a solid position in the card.

In addition, they need to give enough time for Charlotte and Becky to tell a compelling story. If WWE wants to take it to the next level, they could add some stipulation to the match.

#3 Surprise returns

All set for a return?

Surprise returns are a mainstay in the Royal Rumble. Every time that clock ticks down to zero, WWE has an opportunity to give the fans something memorable.

Sometimes, they take it and sometimes they do not. This year, WWE should lean towards the former category.

They have a string of possible surprise returns at their disposal and instead of waiting for them; WWE could use them to enhance the show.

Sami Zayn, Hideo Itami, Undertaker, and Matt Hardy are just some of the names that could fill in. No matter who it is, WWE should have a few surprise entrants in the match so that the fans will have something to cheer for even if the match falls apart.

#2 Successful title defense of Roman Reings

Reigns should reign

The current title reign could make or break Roman Reigns.

His win against Sheamus helped him to scale heights. He, however, needs momentum before he could have his big WrestleMania title defence.

For that to happen, a solid match at Royal Rumble is a necessity. The possible options that WWE has are limited. Sheamus is out of the title picture from the looks of it, and there is no one else credible enough to have a go at Reigns now.

Reigns vs. Triple H match will sell out the arena, but WWE is unlikely to choose this path. Kevin Owens is another option and irrespective of the opponent, Reigns should win at Rumble.

#1 Lesnar, Cena, or Triple H should win the Rumble match

A credible winner

Reigns is destined to reach WrestleMania 32 as the WWE champion. With all the build-up he has had, WWE will not take the risk of letting him drop the title.

This opens up a big question: who should face Reigns at WrestleMania?

The answer is simple, but a complex one indeed. The winner of the Rumble match will face Reigns, which is the easy part. The complexity involves choosing that particular superstar.

Brock Lesnar, John Cena, and Triple H are the only superstars who could fit into the description. Any of these three facing Reigns would make a compelling WrestleMania main event. Booking anyone else as the winner of Royal Rumble will backfire on WWE and yes, Dean Ambrose falls into the ‘anyone else’ category.
