While it was widely rumoured Jinder Mahal was set for an even lengthier championship reign than any of us expected, as we know by now, changes and ideas can come forth at any given time in the WWE for a variety of reasons. It seems the powers that be feared Mahal vs Brock Lesnar might not offer us the matchup we were all hoping for.

Enter AJ Styles. A former WWE Champion with nothing to lose at the surprise opportunity to fight for the title, who destroyed the Modern Day Maharaja's dreams of main-eventing Wrestlemania with a single Phenomenal Forearm. For the time being, at least.

After dethroning Jinder Mahal in surprising fashion at Smackdown in Manchester, has AJ Styles set himself on a championship trajectory headed straight to the show of shows? Here are five reasons why AJ Styles will reign until Wrestlemania.

#1 The recovery process

Let's be honest, as improved as he was, Jinder Mahal was nowhere near as entertaining to watch as AJ Styles. Yes, they are two completely different performers, but the distance in class between them has always been obvious.

Having endured a six-month Mahal reign, the WWE Universe is entitled to have the enjoyment factor brought back to the WWE title. It's looking like WWE's decision to bank on the Modern Day Maharaja might have been in vain.

#2 The main eventer

Even early into his WWE tenure, it was clear to see AJ Styles was no stranger to taking on the main event spot. He had absolutely no fear of being able to bring the goods on such a pressure-inducing stage.

He's been doing it virtually his entire career and, like Shawn Michaels before him, delivers in spades when the time calls for it. He belongs at the top; that's why he should stay there.

#3 Quality performances

As we've discussed, Styles can deliver in the main event spot; no question. When compared to his predecessor Mahal, AJ has the ability to put on a classic almost at the drop of a hat.

His three matches with John Cena are some of the best pieces of WWE programming we've seen for years.

Any one of those matches would make a delectable Mania main event. Why not bet smart and keep Styles at the top for The Show of Shows?

#4 Money in the Bank

AJ Styles ability in the ring certainly has translated into revenue for the WWE. Whenever they have a live audience, you'd struggle to avoid finding someone, if not a whole horde of fans, donning The Phenomenal One's gear. WWE have clearly gone all-out in the design department with Styles' merchandise.

It looks cool at a show or out on the street. Make no mistake, Styles sells. If they know what's good for them, they'll keep the money train rolling.

The internet can be a polarising place, especially for a wrestling fan. With news dropping left, right and centre, sometimes it can be difficult deciding what to believe. What we do know, however, is that there is a lot of online buzz surrounding an apparent meeting of The Phenomenal One and The King of Strong Style at Wrestlemania.

Rumour has it that Vince McMahon was so pleased with the reaction from their face-off at Money in the Bank that he's banking on this as Smackdown's main event. Given that AJ is the current WWE champion, having him keep the title and presenting Shinsuke with a championship opportunity, perhaps with a shock win at the Royal Rumble, would certainly make headlines.

For the fan reaction, if nothing else, this would be viewing gold.
