Can Orton-Cena have a worthwhile rivalry?

Though John Cena was expected to be back to the main event picture, nobody could have predicted Survivor Series to end with John Cena coming out and standing before Randy Orton. The WWE champion and the World Heavyweight Champion held their respective titles up high. Will the titles be unified? Or is it just the beginning of the end for the Authority and so is it just the beginning of the end of Randy Orton’s status as the ‘face of the WWE”?

The people who’ve witnessed WWE programming since its commencement into the PG Era know that Randy Orton and John Cena have squared off before. It was a moment that was expected and anticipated for quite some time. So much so that it was built quite a few years before the inevitable beginning of this rivalry. When one visited the WWE website, there would often be just a virtual poster with only these letters, “FU VS RKO”

This just goes on to show that WWE was building onto it for quite some time.

These two were the company’s version of this era’s best rivalry- the ultimate showdown of two of the company’s most bankable superstars. This was their PG version of Stone Cold- Rock or something close to it. So even before this rivalry began, it had been accorded a legendary status. But, in my opinion, it never even came close to it. It might as well be the most overrated rivalry that the company makes it out to be.

The matches and promos just did not seem anything near special then. But when Cena and Orton had a stare down hours ago at Survivor Series, suddenly this feud looks like it might just be relevant. Or at least it’ll be better than their last lengthy rivalry.

Cena is arguably the best competition that the Authority can get. He is the only superstar one can imagine that Triple H won’t bury as much as the others. But all this would be a bit monotonous if Cena takes out Orton in one go and trample this storyline by being the invincible SuperCena. This storyline does have a chance to be better than their previous storyline but this might just not be anything special.

One relevant outcome of this feud can be the unification of the top two WWE titles. But WWE really needs to move to newer feuds involving newer superstars in the main event instead of giving the same old, same old. But if they have to go back to former rivalries, they should do so only on the pretext of how excited the fans got during each of the feuds build up and how much the wrestlers were able to bring the best out of each other. I don’t know how Cena and Orton’s last rivalry came close on both the aforementioned counts.

In my humble opinion, the best opponent Cena has ever had in this era is the hardcore fan who won’t give up saying ‘Cena Sucks’ and then CM Punk.
