How WWE goofed up Daniel Bryan and CM Punk's storylines

Brock Lesnar taking on CM Punk

Back on August 18th, 2013 WWE came up with one of the most successful and entertaining PPV’s of the year – SummerSlam. Two matches stole the limelight during the event, they were Brock Lesnar vs CM Punk and John Cena vs Daniel Bryan. These two matches gave an idea on how WWE were planning their story lines going ahead.

But seven months down the line, everything has gone down hill for two superstars involved in these matches and the WWE too has faced a lot of flak for their decisions. Lets look at what could have possibly gone wrong.

Brock Lesnar vs CM Punk

Termed as “the Best vs the Beast”, this match was a classic, all out brawl between two top class superstars present today in the WWE. This match should have won the Slammy award for the match of the year, but this match wasn’t even nominated in the category! And the award disappointingly went to John Cena vs The Rock at Wrestlemania 29.

Following the match CM Punk was hot as fire, despite loosing the match. This was the opportune time to give him a push, but the WWE chose to put him in a feud with Curtis Axel and Ryback instead. From here on, all CM punk did was wrestle against the “Paul Heyman Guys” on multiple occasions.

Once CM Punk was done with Paul Heyman and his guys, he was pitted against the Wyatts, this time he had Daniel Bryan for company. This was much more exciting for Punk and the WWE fans at large as this saw two of the most successful indy wrestlers coming together to form a team.

But then for some strange reason, WWE decided to break this team by introducing the Shield into the fray. It now became Bray Wyatt vs Daniel Bryan and The Shield Vs CM punk. After this move by the WWE, CM Punk’s career went down hill, from a top superstar to a mid card guy.

As a result of this frustration of being relegated to the mid card Punk has walked out of the WWE. This incident has garnered a lot of negativity towards the WWE management and the way they are handling some of the superstars.

John Cena vs Daniel Bryan

It was the start of something special in the WWE. Bryan-o-mania had gripped the WWE universe like never before, we were about to see the rise of a Cult superstar like Stone Cold Steve Austin. WWE did as expected by finally giving Bryan a win over Super Cena and in the process handing him the WWE championship.

But as expected Randy Orton turned heel along with the special guest referee for the match Triple H and they both screwed Daniel Bryan. Nothing bad with that, it added an interesting twist in the tale and a new feud for Bryan taking into account the fact that John Cena was scheduled to be out for four months or so due to an injury.

The succeeding story line with Randy Orton where Daniel Bryan was termed as a “B+ guy” was good too, it was done in order to get some heat on Orton and the Authority, which it did.

But eventually as the feud went on Daniel Bryan was being screwed over and over again. You just cannot do this to a rising superstar, it takes away all the momentum, which is so hard to build.

Imagine if this would have happened to John Cena when he faced JBL for the WWE championship, if Cena wasn’t given the chance then, would he have still made it as the face of the WWE? If Batista hadn’t won against Triple H at Wrestlemania would he have been so successful? The answer is a clear NO!

Luckily for Bryan, the WWE fans have always been behind him, screaming their lungs out with the YES chants whenever he comes out to wrestle or on some occasions when he is not wrestling! This can take the sheen off of other matches too, for example the Royal Rumble, when Rey Mysterio came out as the 30th man, the whole arena booed him out. Even Batista was booed when he won the Royal Rumble! The John Cena vs Randy Orton match was a disaster waiting to happen, with the fans chanting “YES! YES! YES!” and “this is awful”.

On the whole, WWE have literally squandered an opportunity in doing something special with Daniel Bryan. Now, they might have to think hard about what they want to do with Daniel Bryan after the Royal Rumble fiasco. Lets hope WWE does the right thing this time.

And last but certainly not the least, what’s up with the Authority? They seem to be heel only towards Daniel Bryan! When Triple H and Stephanie McMahon took the pseudonym of “The Authority” they were supposed to push their weight around. It did happen initially, when they were literally bullying Daniel Bryan, The Rhodes family and Big Show.

The whole locker room stood in protest against them for this bullying behavior. It was being said that Vince Mcmahon would make a grand come back and tell the power couple who the real boss is! But it never happened. Adding further uncertainty is the fact that the Authority seem to have mellowed down a bit, and strangely seem opposed to Randy Orton.

The Authority storyline clearly has lost the plot and they need something concrete to bring them back up. Rumors are going around that the whole CM Punk fiasco could be a storyline and also that Vince McMahon has clearly told Triple H to stay out of the negotiations with CM Punk. If you have followed the logic, could this lead to something? Lets hope so.
