NXT: 5 Points to note (December 21st, 2016)

An explosive main event was the highlight of this week’s show

If you’re the kind of wrestling fan who reads spoilers from NXT tapings, you already know about the glorious contender for Nakamura’s NXT Championship. If you're not, and just watched this week’s episode of NXT television, we’re sure you’re excited about the main event at NXT Takeover: San Antonio.

We are just as thrilled to bring you highlights from Full Sail University, where we witnessed a hard hitting Fatal Four Way Elimination match to be Number 1 contender for the top prize in the hottest brand. Of course, there are other things we noted as well, and we shall bring them to you in our recap. But let’s start at the end, with the big NXT Takeover news.

#5 Main event for next NXT Takeover is glorious!

This is a dream match in many ways

Shinsuke Nakamura is a name that one associates with NJPW. On the other hand, Bobby Roode is one of the biggest names from TNA. At NXT Takeover: San Antonio, two of the biggest names in the world will collide on an NXT stage, on Royal Rumble weekend.

It will be a clash of styles for sure, Strong Style vs. the traditional old school wrestling of Bobby Roode. Ever since they’ve arrived at NXT, the two men have had the most flamboyant and charismatic entrances in sports entertainment. We can only imagine how amazing their entrances will be at San Antonio.

Right now, let’s find out how Bobby Roode got the chance to main event an NXT Takeover!

#4 One of the best main events in a while

We had no complaints about this hard-hitting match

After what seems like an eternity, NXT Television had a match that seems almost Takeover worthy. This week’s main event lived up to the hype and showed us four top Superstars at the summit of the NXT food chain, wanting to make a big impression!

We must say that of the four in the ring, former ROH superstar Roderick Strong was by far the most impressive with high flying moves and excellent in-ring work. Andrade Cien Almas has found his footing too, as a heel and looks far more vicious in the ring than he ever has.

To be honest, the match reached its climax with Bobby Roode and Tye Dillinger; two men who’ve faced each other in the past. Dillinger scored near fall after near fall, but in true underdog fashion, ate a 3 count from the Glorious One.

Wow, we know sports entertainment is pre-determined, but one can’t help but feel bad for Dillinger.

#3 Daria Beranato is the tough MMA Chick

Sadly, she couldn’t end her losing streak

Daria Beranato has been one of the more interesting looking characters in NXT, in recent memory. With a legitimate MMA background, she carries herself like a UFC Superstar and incorporates MMA-ish moves in her arsenal.

She had been hand picked by Billie Kay and Peyton Royce as their partner against Liv Morgan, Ember Moon and Aliyah a few weeks ago. However, she had been left high and dry by her own tag team partners during the course of the match allowing the babyfaces to pin her.

This week, Beranato sought retribution against Billie Kay in a singles environment, something we haven’t seen from her. In the limited time we saw her in the ring before Royce interfered to allow Billie Kay pick up her victory, she decimated her opponent with a barrage of genuine looking MMA style punches.

We certainly think she has the potential to grow and be a major player in the NXT Women’s division. A division we must discuss...

#2 Everyone wants a piece of Asuka

Can Billie Kay dethrone the Empress of Tomorrow?

As it stands, it’s been looking like Ember Moon is the most likely challenger for Asuka’s NXT Women’s Championship. Day by day, Asuka has been growing more complacent in her demeanour and behavior and believes that there’s nobody who can take her on.

After their victory, the heel stable of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce called forth Asuka and challenged her claim that there were no contenders for her crown. When Asuka was cutting a promo backstage, the lunatic Nikki Cross from heel faction SAnitY eyed her maliciously as well. Things are really heating up in the NXT women’s division. Watch out, Asuka!

#1 Referee stops a tag team match

A squash match, with a new finish

NXT sure knows how to keep squash matches interesting. The Authors of Pain delivered such a beating to their opponents, Anthony Bowens and John Ortagun that the referee had to stop the match. This was an effective way to keep The Authors of Pain looking dominant before they square off against the winner of the Revival-#DIY match.

Paul Ellering cut a promo after the match and said The Authors of Pain were on a seek-and-destroy mission. While the tag team had seemed vulnerable in their match against TM-61 at the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Classic tag team tournament at NXT Takeover: Toronto, this was a great way to make them look simply vicious and unstoppable.

I just cannot wait for NXT Takeover: San Antonio!
