The WWE title was put on the line in the main event match at Payback as reigning champion John Cena squared off against the powerful no.1 contendor Ryback. For the first time ever, WWE introduced the concept of a three-stage Hell match to determine the champion.
Ryback won the Lumberjack match to gain the initiative. But Cena completed a comeback by winning the Tables match and the Ambulance match to successfully defend his title.
