CM Punk, the sound of his very name passes chills down the spine for all of the wrestling fans. Such is this man’s in-ring skills, his technique, his BAD-ASS heel gimmick, his wrestling skills, his credibility to put the opponents over, his legacy! He can proudly be proclaimed as the longest reigning WWE Champion of the modern era, where-in he held the title for 434 days, 60% of the time during which he was a wonderful heel, a Paul Heyman guy. He has feuded with almost all the big names in the company (yeah, I know how much we wanna see him and Stone Cold in the same wrestling ring) and almost with everyone in the current roster, of which, feuds like those against John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Chris Jericho, Undertaker are the highlights.
And we all remember the 2011 WWE SummerSlam match against John Cena, don’t we? Apart from being pitted as THE best match of his career, this was the night when the PG Era went gaga about the writers, when the champion CM Punk walked out of the company (kayfabe). Vince McMahon was there to recieve the screw-job , and every fan LOVED it! Fast-forwarding, it was the night of Royal Rumble, the place where road to WrestleMania began. He was booked in a match against The Rock, the part-timer WWE loves to get in when and where possible.
CM Punk was made to lose the match, the title, which in turn(obviously) when to the hands of John Cena in WrestleMania again. This action by the creative is the most bitched about, most infamous act in the PG Era. At a Monday night RAW, he faced John Cena in what was the MOTY candidate, and in fact, the best match I’ve ever seen. And after this match, CM Punk was pushed to the ultimate challenge, the one of facing the Deadman at the grandest stage of ‘em all. Althrough the build-up to the match, the promos and the bad-ass moments displayed by him were spectacular, to say the least.
Later on, in WrestleMania 29, he lost to taker in what’s arguably the best match of that night. After this, he was pushed to the upper midcard and finally, in this year’s Royal Rumble, in the rumble match, where he was one among the last four to remain, he was eliminated. And what was the result? Batista won the match.(why WWE, why?)
It was this night, when talked about, brings chills down the spine of almost all the WWE followers across the globe. The night when he QUIT. Feelings aside, let’s go on and dive into the discussion about the various theories out there, as to why he quit.
1. He quit because he knew he had to work with Triple H in the WrestleMania 30, which he didn’t like. Although this seems acceptable, this is clearly not the kinda guy Punk is. Give him whoever you want, he puts on a great fight whatsoever. And working with the game, is totally not what a guy like CM Punk would reject. So, this theory becomes obsolete.
2. He had his issues against the writers, and the people in the locker room. This clearly seems to be one of the logical reasons out there. You work your a** off for a company in every night , every show possible, and what do you ultimately get? Nothing! A screw job! But we have to brace ourselves with the fact that Daniel Bryan was so over with the fans that, they wouldn’t leave the arena without seeing him perform. A Punk-Bryan would be great, but nevertheless, the creative just doesn’t do what we want.
3. He was banged up, and thought he couldn’t deliver to his best, so he quit. However strange may it sound for a guy like him to tell this, this seems to be THE REASON he left. Insiders in the company say that he would visit the docs and the therapists more during a show than anyone else, and this explains the reason. For a guy like him, this is the only possible thing that could have happened to suddenly walk away. I hope he is getting better day-by-day, so that on one final day, we could hear the cult of personality and see him walk down the ramp.
So this brings us back to the ultimate question, will he EVER come back?
Well, if the real reason is one among the first two theories above, sadly he won’t. But if it turns out to be the third, there are many chances of him returning than not. Fingers crossed here.
