Analysing the Transfer Gossip – 27th July Part Two

Brazil v Spain: Final - FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013

As we move in to the off-season an unprecedented amount of managerial movement around Europe will surely see an already frantic transfer market go in to overdrive. This will give plenty of opportunities for transfer rumour and gossip. So how much of it is realistic?

Part One is here.

Barcelona will make a £25m move for Chelsea’s 26-year-old Brazilian centre-half David Luiz.

What’s the story? So what if they do, Chelsea will reject it.

Does it make sense? David Luiz would make for a good signing for Barcelona but there is no way that Chelsea will let their only central defender with the potential to be top class go anywhere.

Is the price right? Nope. They paid £24m for him and are only just working out how to use him properly so why are they selling?

Will it happen? 0/10 – Not. A. Chance.

Paris St-Germain insist midfielder Marco Verratti is not for sale. The 20-year-old Italian helped PSG to the French title last season and he has been linked with a move to either Premier League champions Manchester United or Italian side Napoli.

What’s the story? Verratti is trying to force PSG in to giving him a pay rise and his agent is using the tiresome but usually effective ‘pay me or sell me’ strategy that Benteke used at Villa.

Does it make sense? Verratti has the talent to be a truly world class player and he is paid peanuts compared to his PSG team mates so it’s only fair that he wants a pay rise. However, it sounds like his agent is asking for a ridiculous rise and PSG aren’t happy about it.

Is the price right? It’s pretty irrelevant. PSG aren’t exactly a selling club.

Will it happen? 0/10 – He’ll be in Paris for the coming season.

Newcastle United will have to pay £8.6m to sign 27-year-old Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

What’s the story? OK, so pay it then.

Does it make sense? Yes. The original price that made the media of £4m which absurdly low. This is a good price though still for a big, quick, strong presence who has got to double figures in goals for 7 years.

Is the price right? Yep. They could probably even pay more and still be satisfied with the deal.

Will it happen? 8/10 – It should do. Kinnear made it clear that he wanted a striker and this is a solid fee. Lyon have been very active in selling.

Sunderland are believed to be considering a move for Brescia left-back Fabio Daprela, 24, if a deal with Valencia for Liverpool target Aly Cissokho falls through.

What’s the story? Last season Danny Rose did well at left back but with his return to Spurs they do have a weakness.

Does it make sense? Daprela had a few games for West Ham in the Premier League a few years ago but only has significant experience in Serie B so it’s a gamble. The drop off in standard between Cissokho and Daprela is reasonable. However, the Swiss is only 22 so could still have a lot of improvement to come yet.

Is the price right? Daprela wouldn’t be much more than £3m. Fair enough really for a young player in a position of need.

Will it happen? 7/10 – Sunderland are ploughing a recruitment furrow all of their own so it could easily do.

Chelsea forward Demba Ba has insisted that he will not try to quit the Blues should Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney join the Stamford Bridge club.

What’s the story? The issue for Ba, is that even if/when Chelsea don’t sign Rooney, he will be at best third in line for the role of lone front man, maybe even fourth.

Does it make sense? Not really football wise, but then there have been plenty of murmurs that Ba will follow the money and he won’t get more than he’s on right now unless a Russian club comes in.

Is the price right? If they were offered £10m they wouldn’t say no. Clubs like Stoke who need goals and have money should be willing to offer that.

Will it happen? 5/10 – Rooney isn’t coming to Chelsea, but that is pretty much of no consequence to Ba’s future.
