Everton completed 3 incoming transfers on deadline day as they bought James McCarthy from Wigan as a replacement for Old Trafford bound Marouane Fellaini and took Chelsea‘s Romelu Lukaku and Manchester City‘s Gareth Barry on loan.
McCarthy joined from Everton for a fee of around £12 million, say Sky Sports, as he renews his relationship with former Wigan boss Roberto Martinez at Goodison Park. The Republic of Ireland player had been linked with Everton all summer, but Wigan chairman Dave Whelan had been unwilling to agree to a deal which saw the transfer fee paid in instalments. The clubs managed to reach an agreement on deadline day.
Everton also completed the loan signing of Gareth Barry from Manchester City as they look to increase their options in midfield following Fellaini’s departure. City were reportedly looking to sell the player, but eventually relented and loaned him out to Everton. It is unknown how much of his wages will be paid by Manchester City.
Roberto Martinez boosted his attacking options by signing Chelsea’s young striker Romelu Lukaku on loan after he impressed on loan at West Bromwich Albion last season. West Brom were reportedly interested in taking him back on loan, but Everton beat them to his signature after Chelsea had initially indicated that the Belgian international would stay at the club, as he appeared in three of four Chelsea matches this season.
