Thursday, October 10, 2024, saw the upcoming Gintama anime spinoff series begin streaming a new promotional video, revealing its October 2025 release window and more. This includes the anime’s main staff, main cast members, and a key visual that shows the original protagonist Gintoki and the spinoff’s “new” protagonist, Ginpachi.

Unfortunately, the trailer didn’t have any footage aside from some work-in-progress shots and primarily confirmed that the actual trailer will debut at Jump Festa 2025. Thus, it seems likely that fans won’t be getting any more news on the Gintama anime spinoff until the trailer’s Jump Festa debut on December 21, 2024, at 3:40 pm Japanese Standard Time.

Gintama anime spinoff confirms returning starring cast from original series and more

As mentioned above, the Gintama anime spinoff’s promotional video doesn’t offer any meaningful look at the series beyond some work-in-progress animation. Instead, the teaser shows the class 3-Z sign, referencing the classroom that will seemingly be the anime’s main setting. This is also referenced in its formal title of 3–Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei, which translates to Class 3-Z’s Teacher Ginpachi.

The spinoff anime series will see the starring cast from the original return in their respective roles. This includes Tomokazu Sugita as Ginpachi Sakata (playing Gintoki Sakata in the original series), Daisuke Sakaguchi as Shinpachi Shimura, and Rei Kugimiya as Kagura. Additional returning cast members to the series include:

  • Satsuki Yukino as Tae Shimura
  • Susumu Chiba as Isao Kondo
  • Kazuya Nakai as Toshiro Hijikata
  • Kenichi Suzumura as Sogo Okita
  • Tetsuharu Ohta as Sagaru Yamazaki
  • Yū Kobayashi as Ayame Sarutobi
  • Akira Ishida as Kotaro Katsura
  • Takehito Koyasu as Shinsuke Takasugi
  • Satoshi Hino as Kamui

Natsumi Higashida is directing the anime at BN Pictures, with Makoto Morikawa serving as the general director. Kazuyuki Fudeyasu and Mitei Mark II are in charge of series composition, while Shinji Takeuchi is the chief animation director. Finally, Audio Highs is composing the music for the anime series. It is expected that additional staff will be revealed as the series’ October 2025 release window draws nearer.

The Gintama anime spinoff will serve as the adaptation of author Tomohito Osaki and illustrator Hideaki Sorachi’s original spinoff light novel of the same formal name. The light novel began in February 2006, ending in September 2013 after releasing seven volumes. Shueisha published the light novels under their Jump jBooks imprint. The concept was previously animated as a short that would conclude several episodes of the original anime.

Sorachi is also the mangaka of the original Gintama manga series, which was serialized in totality from December 2003 to June 2019 across multiple platforms. The manga was compiled into 77 total compilation volumes, of which only 23 have been translated into English. The last release was in August 2011, suggesting there are no plans to continue translation anytime soon.
