The Monsterverse has received multiple films with the characters of King Kong and Godzilla, and now they are coming back to the former with the recent Skull Island animated adaptation. Today saw the release of the trailer, which includes King Kong and the now-iconic island that has been closely associated with his name.

The trailer depicts a group of individuals who are stuck on the island and witness the destruction of a helicopter by a strange animal, indicating that this place is not normal. It provides several different highlights about how these characters will have to adapt to the wilderness to survive while giving some minor flashes of Kong, highlighting his role as the king of Skull Island.

This Skull Island series is the first return of the place in question since the 2017 Kong movie, thus signaling how the Monsterverse and the people of Legendary Television want to expand the lore of this iconic location.

More about the history of Skull Island

The island first showed up in the 1933 Kong film, becoming one of the most iconic elements of the entire franchise ever since, appearing in multiple adaptations, remakes, reboots, and across several media. It is often presented as the home of King Kong and many other monster-like creatures that are often of a prehistoric leaning.

At this juncture, it has to be said that the landscape has also changed a lot over the years and every adaptation offers a different approach to the island itself, which emphasizes how each creative team interprets the world of Kong. This Netflix version is quite likely to take a different approach than earlier iterations of the famed island.

This series is also set in the continuity of the Monsterverse, which is important to highlight because then that means that the events that have happened in the Godzilla and Kong movies play a role in the context of the series. Skull Island is an attempt by Legendary Television and Netflix of pushing the envelope when it comes to this shared universe and this series is going to be quite interesting.
