The Pittsburgh Pirates have nine players eligible to sign with other teams as free agents. Whether due to the team's decision or simply the end of a contract, the team now has more than a few roster spots to fill.
The following nine players could be back, but their former positions are now open going into 2025.
Nine free agents from the Pittsburgh Pirates
9) LHP Jalen Beeks
Jalen Beeks's contract with the Pirates ended after 2024, and they did not extend him. Beeks didn't have a good season, netting zero bWAR after a 7-4 season with a 4.50 ERA in 71 games.
8) LHP Ryan Borucki
Ryan Borucki's contract ended after the 2024 season. His numbers were disappointing: -0.4 bWAR, 7.36 ERA, 11 innings pitched, and 1.64 WHIP. Despite appearing infrequently, Borucki was less valuable than most other Pirates players.
7) LHP Aroldis Chapman
Aroldis Chapman enters free agency after his one-year stint with the Pirates. The former New York Yankees star was decent, if unspectacular, with a 0.4 bWAR, 3.79 ERA, and an impressive 98 strikeouts in just 61.2 innings.
6) OF Bryan De La Cruz
The Pirates declined to tender a contract to Bryan De La Cruz. Whenever a player is non-tendered, they enter free agency regardless of service time or arbitration status. Cruz was a trade deadline acquisition from the Miami Marlins but struggled to settle at the Pittsburgh Pirates and is now a free agent.
5) LHP Marco Gonzales
Marco Gonzales hits free agency following the end of his contract. The left-handed pitcher - who recently underwent a flexor tendon repair surgery on his left forearm - only appeared in seven games last year, posting a 4.45 ERA, 0.5 bWAR, 1.6 WHIP, and 23 strikeouts in 33.2 innings.
4) C Yasmani Grandal
Yasmani Grandal had a disappointing year to close out his contract. The two-time All-Star hit .228 with nine home runs, 27 RBI, 26 runs, and a 95 OPS+ in just 215 at-bats. He had a 0.6 bWAR.
3) 1B Connor Joe
Connor Joe was also non-tendered and entered free agency as a result. He struggled offensively with a .228 batting average, nine home runs, 36 RBI, and a 92 OPS+ in 364 at-bats.
2) DH Andrew McCutchen
Perhaps the most likely player on this list to be back, Andrew McCutchen has gone into free agency again after his contract expired. He has said he would like to return to Pittsburgh, and the team may want him to after a decent season with 0.8 bWAR and 20 home runs.
1) RHP Hunter Stratton
Hunter Stratton was another victim of the non-tender decisions in Pittsburgh, landing in free agency. The second-year player only pitched 37.2 innings for the team and recorded a 3.58 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.
