The Pittsburgh Pirates are an American Baseball team in Major League Baseball. The team is also widely known by its nickname ‘The Pirates’ and ‘The Bucs’. The Pirates is a team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The team was established in 1882 in Allegheny City. They were known as the Allegheny. They changed their name to Pittsburgh Alleghenys in 1887 and then to Pittsburgh Pirates in 1891 and have been with the same name ever since.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have won 5 World Series titles, 9 NL Pennants, and 9 NL East Division titles.

Pittsburgh Pirates History

The Pittsburgh Pirates team seems to have been established in 1882. The organization took root in 1876 when the Allegheny BaseBall Club came into being. The club originated from Allegheny City. This is considered as the start of professional baseball in Pittsburgh. The team became a part of the Minor League International Association in 1877 after it lost the bid to become part of the newly created National League.

Unfortunately, the team stopped being part of the Minor League just after a year due to fierce competition from other teams based in Pittsburgh and player defection. However, the team rebranded in 1881 and started a new Allegheny club. The team became a part of the American League in 1882 and was part of the League till 1886. In 1887, the team became a part of the National League and is a part of the League to date.

In the early 1900s, the nickname Pirates was getting popular. In 1960, the team had an overhaul when Branch Rickey became the new owner. The team made its National League (NL) East Division debut in 1969. In 1994, the team became a part of the Central Division which the team still belongs to.

Pittsburgh Pirates Owner

The current owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates is Robert Nutting. He is the owner of the team. Nutting was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, U.S. on March 29, 1962. He attended the Williams College. Robert is an American businessman and President and CEO of Ogden Newspapers. He is also the former Chairman of Seven Springs Mountain Resort. He is the sixth principal owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates and he acquired the team in January 2007.

Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey and Logo

The current Pittsburgh Pirates jersey consists of the colors Black, gold, white, and gray. The first official jersey that the team wore was made in 1912. Back then it was a pinstripe jersey with the wording ‘Pirates’ written on the front of the placket. The color scheme of the uniform back then was Red, White, and blue.

The current jersey that the team flaunts comes in five variations. The home jersey is white, black, and yellow coloring. The away uniform is grey with the added black and yellow coloring. The team has two alternate uniforms. Both of them have solid black jerseys. However, one has white pants and the other has grey pants. Another difference the two uniforms have is that the first alternate uniform has just the logo of ‘P on the jersey and the second alternate uniform has full Pittsburgh written on the jersey.

The team also has a City Connect uniform which features a solid yellow jersey with black pants. In 2014, the team changed its logo to what it is today. A bright yellow ‘P’.
