Ex-Astros player Trey Mancini once opened up about being unsure of his return to baseball during his cancer treatment 

Trey Mancini's return to baseball after battling cancer is one of the most legendary comeback stories in MLB history. In April 2020, Trey was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer and missed the pandemic-shortened 2020 season to undergo chemotherapy.

Seven months later, in November 2020, he was declared cancer-free. Looking back at his journey, Mancini recounted feeling despondent about his MLB future during his cancer treatment in March 2021.

"There were times early on when I wasn’t entirely sure I’d be playing baseball again," Mancini said in an MLB.com articl. "I'd be lying if I'd say that was the first thing that came to mind. The whole time I just wanted to be healthy long-term and live a long life. And baseball definitely was on the back burner when I was going through all that."

Finally, after staying away from the baseball diamond for a long time, the designated hitter was back in the Baltimore Orioles' lineup on Opening Day 2021 in Boston.

"If great comeback stories inspire, then Trey's is truly one of the greatest," the Baltimore Orioles tweeted.

In November 2022, Mancini received the 2021 American League Comeback Player of the Year award after blasting 21 home runs with 71 RBIs.

In August 2022, Trey Mancini was acquired by the Houston Astros from the Baltimore Orioles in a three-team trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Mancini's midseason trade to the Astros proved to be a game-changer for him. He won the World Series in November as Houston defeated the Philadelphia Phillies.

Throughout the ups and downs, Mancini's wife, Sara Perlman, stuck by him like a rock and acted as his primary caregiver. They wed in December 2022, one year after getting engaged in November 2021.

After electing free agency in 2022, Trey Mancini agreed to sign a two-year deal with the Chicago Cubs in January.
