New York Mets fans react to top prospect Francisco Alvarez being sent down to minor leagues: "He's not trending well" "What a terrible spring he had"

New York Mets top prospect Francisco Alvarez wasn't likely to stick with the team after spring training. The team already has two options at the catcher position behind Tomas Nido and Omar Narvaez. Alvarez got extended playing time in spring training due to Narvaez playing in the World Baseball Classic.

He didn't see the ball well and struggled mightily at the plate. Alvarez went 3-for-28 in 31 plate appearances. The Mets announced on Wednesday that they had optioned the prospect to Triple-A.

The team called Alvarez up last season for a cup of coffee at the end of the year. He played in five games. Given how young he is and his little experience at that level, it makes sense for the team to be patient with him.

The last thing a team wants is to rush a prospect when he's not ready. Struggling early can break a prospect's confidence. Most aren't used to struggling in this game, so a team must have a plan with a prospect.

"He's not trending well. Def worries," one fan tweeted.
"What a terrible spring he had and Alonso strikeout totals is a little alarming too," another fan tweeted.

Some fans are concerned with how much he struggled in spring training. They were expecting more from someone who had torn up the minor leagues at the plate.

Other New York Mets fans aren't too worried to hear Alvarez is being sent down. He's coming off ankle surgery, which took place in October. The surgery was done to address cartilage damage.

Injuries have halted the hype the New York Mets made over the winter

The New York Mets were busy during the winter upgrading their roster. They signed reigning American League Cy Young award winner Justin Verlander to be paired with Max Scherzer.

Things looked good for the 2023 season until All-Star closer Edwin Diaz went down with an injury at the World Baseball Classic. He had surgery on his right patellar tendon last Thursday and will likely be out the entire season.

This has caused the team to scramble to try and find a closer before opening day rolls around. They were one of the teams that watched Zack Britton throw a bullpen last week.

The Mets still have the means to be successful in 2023, but Diaz's injury was a punch to the gut.
