Can Mark Vientos beat out Tommy Pham and Darin Ruf for an outfield position with the New York Mets?

Can Mark Vientos make the Mets?

Mark Vientos has taken the New York Mets by storm this spring training. The young prospect has blasted home runs, including one an absurd 469 feet. He's hitting the ball extremely well right now and appears poised to give the Mets a decision to make.

Vientos is their eighth-ranked prospect and looks like he's ready to make the leap to the majors. The only problem is that Vientos doesn't have a position. He's typically a corner infielder, but he's been testing out the outfield, where there's more likely to be space for him to play.

Vientos said:

“My focus [this offseason] is to play every single day in the major leagues. Whether it’s first, third, I want to play every single day and help this team as much as I can.”

However, Mark Sanchez of the New York Post detailed that his future might be in the outfield, which makes Darin Ruf and Tommy Pham his biggest competition.

He's not going to beat out Mark Canha, Brandon Nimmo or Starling Marte for a starting outfield spot, so Pham and Ruf are more realistic competitors. Can he beat them out, though?

Can Mark Vientos land a spot on the MLB roster?

Mark Vientos has been crushing baseballs so hard that it's going to be difficult for the Mets not to put him on the major league roster. However, there's still a long way to go in Spring Training.

That could be good news for Vientos. If he continues to crush the ball, he could wind up as the fourth outfielder or a utility player. The long spring also means there's time for him to come back down to earth.

Vientos is only the eighth-ranked prospect in the system and he's not in MLB's top 100. Him being a major league contributor this season would be surprising. Additionally, him not being a true outfielder makes it harder.

When faced with the choice for a backup outfielder, it makes sense that the Mets would lean towards a veteran outfielder rather than an infield prospect. That means Mark Vientos would have to hit even better, and that's asking a lot of him.
