The Philadelphia Phillies had a stunning run through the playoffs last season that nearly culminated in a huge World Series upset. They began by upsetting the St. Louis Cardinals in a sweep and then went on to face the 101-win division rival, the Atlanta Braves.
They beat them and moved to the NLCS, where the San Diego Padres awaited. They beat them rather handily and moved on to face the Houston Astros.
The Phillies took a 2-1 World Series lead, but ultimately succumbed to the superior Astros in six games. It was a stunning run but it didn't end the way the Philly faithful would have liked.
Fortunately, that was not going to be their first World Series title had they pulled it off. It has been a while, but the Phillies have won it all before.
How many World Series titles do the Philadelphia Phillies have?
The Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series in 2008 over the Tampa Bay Rays in five games. Before that, their only other title came in 1980, when they topped the Kansas City Royals in six games.
In 2009, Philadelphia very nearly repeated as World Series winners. The Phillies lost to the New York Yankees in six games that year. In 1993, they lost that World Series. This time, they fell to the Toronto Blue Jays, also in six games.
In 1983, the Phillies made it to the Fall Classic as well. They lost that series in five to the Baltimore Orioles.
The Yankees topped them in 1950, though that was before there was an official postseason bracket. In those days, the NL champion (regular-season record leader) faced the AL champion at the end and the winner was crowned.
They lost that scenario in 1915 as well, this time to the Boston Red Sox in five games. It was the first time the Phillies had been to the World Series in their history.
In 2023, the Philadelphia Phillies will try to get back to the promised land and win it all this time. They had a strong offseason, but will still need everything to go right to make it back.
